What Happened to Drivers for Older Computers?

I need to do a clean re-install of Windows XP on an 8-year old Dimension 8300 (still working quite well, than you :emotion-21:). Much to my surprise, Dell's driver download support page no longer provides any drivers for this model--thanks a lot, Dell. :emotion-45:

Unless someone can steer me to a source for these driver files, I guess I'll have to try one of those "driver back-up" programs. Any recommendations?

Just being curious, I check on another old Dell I have that's just 5 years old--no Dell support for it either.

The Driver & Download website is currently being upgraded and there have been glitches. They should be fixed soon. Do not use any shortcuts you have made to access the support pages. Use the links on the main Dell Support site.

Edit: I see what you mean about older models. Others have reported this too. I hope it will be fixed some time soon. I guess we just have to wait to see. The "improvements on the way" message still appears on the Support site.

Don't Dell driver packages install themselves in a folder? If so, that may be a viable source of drivers.

No idea, Dell is currently working to fix the new Drivers and Downloads site issues.

Not an ideal solution for you RChris, but in the past I've used a linux live disk to identify hardware, then scoured the web for drivers.  "Parted Magic" is a useful utility disk which includes "System Profiler".  Cross reference "PCI devices" with Windows Device Manager to see which drivers you're missing.

They'll be back, but not sure when.  We received word that Dell is working on the problem.

You can usually identify hardware in Device Manager too, even without a driver.  If you opt to get the driver from another source, watch out for "generics" and "value-added" drivers.

Same problem here.  Did a clean install of XP on my Dimension 8300, but I don't have the disk with the drivers on it.  (Device Manager says I have problems with Ethernet Controller, Multi Media Audio Controller, SM Bus Controller, Video Controller VGA Compatible.)

The Dell diver support page says: "No Downloads are available for the Dimension 8300."

But there are drivers for the Dimension 8100, 8200, 8250, 8400 etc.

Does anyone know if or when the Dimension 8300 drivers are coming back?

Thanks

FYI some of the drivers for your computer will be contained in the Intel Chipset Installation Utility, which you can download from Intel's site.

If it has Soundmax audio, the drivers aren't available from the manufacturer's site, but sometimes drivers for another mainboard will work. I'm unsure about the onboard network adapter.

There was issues with the drives and download pages. Most of these have been resolved and you should be able to find the drivers you need now

The driver issue is not fixed.  They also BROKE the http://ftp.us.dell.com/  site and have many gibberish folders there.

I have the same problem.  I have to install Win XP Pro on a Dell Optiplex 745C ( I have nothing, but the OEM Windows XP Pro CDROM). Windows installed fine, just no drivers (so no network interface card drivers, etc.).  I guess I'm sunk.
