XPS 8700 and GTX 1070/1080

Once the new Nvidia cards are released, if anyone has experience on their functionality with the Dell 8700, please post. Thank you.

Are there any problems reaching the power connectors? When I bought my 970, I bought the shortest card I could find (9.5") as it always looked like the longer cards (10.5+") would have the power connectors blocked by the front cage in the 8700 case.

you can only reach those connectors if you plugged the power before you insert the card. Once the card is in the slot, they are unreachable.

My cables are long enough for any cards but I replaced the power supply the day I got the computer. I guess someone could probably add (buy ?) or make an extension.

@Justme2016 Did you have to replace any cables with longer ones? Also, how much room is there left in the case with the card installed? Did you have to do anything with the hard drive bays? By the way, what kind of temps are you getting with your STRIX 1070? Thanks

@TensiveChunk21

All of the factory cables work (but you will need a six pin to eight pin adapter, which you can find on Amazon).  There's a good couple of inches of space in front of the card, but it takes up nearly every bit of width in the case.  Hard drive bays can be left as is, though I opted to remove the lower cage when I installed my power supply a couple of days after I installed the Strix 1070.  My current maximum temp reached on the card is 64 degrees Celsius, per CAM.  That includes benchmarks I did in Unigine Valley.

The EVGA GTX 1060 sc works well, very easy to install and only requires 400W so need to upgrade the PSU

Nice !

And, just to be clear, each and everyone one of us with GTX 7xx and 9xx cards hates all of you with GTX 10xx cards

Better, faster, less power and without a PSU upgrade.

My PSU of choice for the XPS 8700 is Seasonic X-650 or Seasonic SS 660 XP2. They fit sungly, are super quiet, cool running and more than ample power for any graphics card.

BIOS of A10 or higher for GTX 9xx or 10xx cards. I think A11 is needed for windoze 10.

I use 18 inch SATA III cables, straight connector on both end or straight with one right angle connector.

As far as which cards fit or don't fit checkout this thread.

good luck!

Hey guys!

First of all: thank You for the ton of information You all shared with us! It was really helpful.

I own a Dell XPS 8700 with the i/-4770 and 24GB of RAM. I currently have a GTX 660 installed and I want to buy a 1070 as well and after reading through the thread I'm convinced that it will work.

I have one last question though:

1. I read that I need a certain windows update version. Understood.

2. I read in other threads (topic was also raised here) that I need to upgrade my BIOS version through the DELL website. Is that correct? Do I need a specific version?

Thank you in advance for your help!

2) BIOS A10 (Win7/81) or A11 (Win10) is needed for GTX 9x0 and 10x0 cards on the 8700

If you don't do that the card will not post and you will have a black screen.

The windows update? You will need to install new drivers, and there are several ways to do this.

I find DDU is a very good way to remove all the remnants of your old driver.

Then I go to nvidia's download page for the card and only install the minimum software. I don't install GEforce experience and I make sure the driver is not set to auto-update.

Does a MSI GeForce 1070 Gaming X or Z fits nicely inside the XPS 8700/8900 case?

I had an EVGA 1070 SC Gaming and it fit without problems.

I also upgraded my PSU to a Corsair 500W.

The MSI GTX 1070 Gaming X and Z and Quicksilver are identical dimensions to the MSI GTX 970 Gaming 4G : 10.98" x 5.51"

The MSI GTX 970 Gaming 4G fits snugly in an XPS 8700.

here is one of our 8700s with a GTX 970 gaming 4G.

Thanks, Dan <3 And the EVGA 1070 FTW fits? Ive been told that I would need to cut some of the metal parts, but I think the EVGA FTW is actually smaller than the MSI card.

I am not sure on the EVGA cards.

I read somewhere that on one of the cards the power connectors are positioned higher on the board and the power cables may not clear the case.

Notice how vague my statement above is.  I really don't know on the EVGA cards.
