XPS 8700 Front USB Port Issue

Hi guys,

Just  a quick one, I seem to be having a weird issue with the front USB 3 ports on my XPS 8700.

If I plug a flash drive into any of the USB ports it is recognised as being removable and the safely remove hardware icon is present. When plugged into the front USB 3.0 ports however, there is no such option.

I've tried all the USB reset options and links I could find on the net, but alas the issue persists. Somewhere is was mentioned that the removal policy for the front ports could be incorrect, which I have confirmed with a USB info tool.

Where and/or how can I go about changing this setting to enable the safely remove icon to be present when using the front USB ports?

Thanks in advance.

Dell, I think YOU have a problem!

I picked up this program, http://safelyremove.com/blog/en/usbsafelyremove-5-2-final, and installed it.

Plugged in my USB 2.0 Flashdrive and THAT PROGRAM did see it!!!! In the USB 3.0 front plan slot!!!

Then I clicked to REMOVE IT!!!

Huh? Driver doesn't SUPPORT "safe removal"????

Are there different drivers used for the back 3.0 slots where the USB 2.0 drive DOES work in Safely Remove HW than the front panel slots?

As requested, I did as you asked. Still NO GO and I can NOT set what you asked for, NO POLICY tab, see this:

Next I ran USBTREE which shows I'm on USB 3.0 and the device is at N:

Here is what the program USB SAFELY REMOVE sees:

The ERROR that program gets when I try to STOP the drive:

Please REMEMBER, the same device plugged in the REAR USB 3.0 port(s) works as EXPECTED... appears in Windows SAFELY REMOVE HW and does allow the device to be unplugged.

So, why are you putting us through these hoops of repeated same operations? I had Dell on this computer for 1 and 1/2 hours with NO resolution other than 'do not worry about it'!!!

From my perspective there is on of two causes for this.

  1. There is a separate driver for the front ports and it doesn't support USB 2.0 devices.
  2. These is a 'sensing' problem in the cable that connects the front ports to the motherboard and it is causing the front ports to not know when a USB 2.0 device is in it, but one CAN use the device as the OS sees it.

Can you PLEASE send this data to Level 2 and have it expedited? You have my service tag, have them CALL ME if they need too.

I'd LIKE this fixed.

Hi Irvsp,

Would suggest you try this last step and check and also let us know,If the problem is with device not getting detected .?

Steps :

1. Go into Device manager.

2. Right click on the USB device that u connect to the 3.0 port.

3. Select Properties, and make sure you select Quick removal policy, save the changes.

4. Restart the system and check.

YOu can refer to the Pic for reference :

Device Manager->Right click on the USB3 external HD->Properties

If you want to Turn on/Turn off the Auto-play options,

Click on the link http://bit.ly/1kvQnSm and follow the steps mentioned in the link.

Hope this is helpful and let us know your findings.

Hi there,

If I plug my flash drive into the front ports I only have these options...

When plugged into any of the top or rear usb ports I have this...

Farooq, tried the test... put my USB 2.0 flash drive into the front USB 2.0 port, it was NOT found nor was ANY USB 3.0 port info:

Re-did the test with a USB 3.0 Ext. drive in the front 3.0 port, it and the USB 3.0 port was now found:

What does that tell you?

No, I will NOT lose one months of customization to this computer again loading programs, finding programs, and saving stuff that is new.

Do 'US' a favor and get an 8700 and try it yourself and tell us what goes?

I do have a much older version of this system that was from when I cloned over the original C: to the SSD. Last booted a few days after I got the system. If absolutely necessary I might be able to boot that WITHOUT damaging anything else, but I'd rather not.

Haven't you seen enough to determine this is a real problem, not connected to anything but the USB drivers and system h/w?

Even IF a system restore to a 'pristine' state would 'fix' this, we've still done nothing wrong and there is an inherent problem using the 3.0 USB ports.

Feel free to escalate this to some one who would like to connect to my computer and investigate this (in a NON-DESTRUCTIVE way) please.

Hi Irvsp / Carn17580,

I completely understand how frustrating it is.

Lets Try this few last steps which would helps us isolating if the issue is due to hardware or software.

I would suggest you to follow the steps below to run the test on USB on the system.

1.       Open the link http://dell.to/1jX1rKo

2.       Select ‘USB’ under ‘Choose a Diagnostic Type drop down’.

3.       Select ‘USB’.

4.       Click on ‘Run Diagnostics’ button.

5.       Let me know with the results.

If the diagnostics pass,I would suggest you to reset the system to Windows 8 operating system by using the RESET option which will restore the system to factory state.

Switch ON the system and switch OFF the system 3 to 4 times when the Dell logo appears. This will make the system to go into Windows 8 Advanced Start-up Options’ screen. Please select Troubleshoot option and choose the RESET option so that it resets the windows operating system to factory settings and you will loss all data and you will need to reinstall all latest drivers.

Note: You may loss all of the data for performing above steps backup all data from the system before proceeding with steps.

Farooq, I just booted to the OLD C:, the original 1TB drive, last booted on 5/1 I think? That was the date of the clone to the SDD. Man is that mechanical drive slow :emotion-2:!

Anyway the RESULTS are the same, Safely Remove HW doesn't see the 2.0 flashdrive, the diagnostic you wanted us to run had no problems and passed all test (but like above, DID not see the 2.0 Flashdrive).

I don't know what else I can do for you?

Just another thought here, I am on the latest version of Win8.1, including the newest kb2919355 which I did on 4/29. That was the FIRST day the computer was turned on.

It is possible the version of W8.1 before the W8.1.1 update might have worked, I do not know?

Thank you Irvsp for starting this thread and explaining the problem so clearly, it is exactly the same with the two front USB ports on our new Dell 8700. I'm hoping a way to resolve it gets posted here soon, I have done all the uninstalling and reinstalling drivers and troubleshooting and everything else recommended.

Good to see others with this problem, Dell sort of doesn't think it is? The more that say they have the problem, the better the chance of having it fixed.

Anyone else reading this thread, add your name here if you have the problem too.

Yep, add me to the list also!

Once difference: New XPS 8700 running Windows 7, home premium.

Ironically, year old XPS 8700 Window 8: A-OK!  Same flash drives fine on one machine, but followed the exact problem you originally laid out with your detail examples on new machine. (3 days out of the box.)

Have discovered that on the W7 computer, if I have a flash drive inserted into any of the top or rear, 2.0 or 3.0 ports, the front 2 3.0 ports function normally with a 3.0 or 2.0 flash drive!  What's up with that?
