XPS 8700 nVidia GTX video card upgrades,

Now that the XPS A10 8700 BIOS update is out, Chris-M would like to close the long Black screen of death thread.

Let's use this to post successes and links out to other forums with tips, tricks and how-to-resolve issues with high-end nVidia GTX cards.

This will help others choose wisely or perhaps find a solution to an already solved problem.

In the body of your post, if you have upgraded to a high-end nVidia GTX graphics card, please list the following.

* specific video card
* exact driver version
* Brand monitor and resolution and cable type: HDMI, DVI, Display Port or (yikes) VGA
* specific power supply you are using if you upgraded or indicate Stock Dell 460W.

Ask questions, link to benchmarks, describe what has gone well and reflect on what you might have done differently.

I encourage AMD owners to start a similar discussion, but let us keep this thread to high end nVidia GTX cards only.

High end should imply above and beyond what Dell has shipped, or more than a GTX 660 or GTX 750ti.

GTX 760, 770, 780, 780ti, 970 and 980 graphics cards are what I would consider high-end.

i just finally finished installing my msi gtx 980 the thing is a beast althoough like the other guy on this forum i did have to cut a bit of the side walll but it works perfectly

I was that guy lol. Would you mind posting a picture of your installation so I can compare about the amputation of that metal piece?

I agree, that MSI GTX 980 gaming is a beast and it just purrrsss at any AAA title I've thrown at it with everything maxed out.

sorry bro didnt have time for pics yet but for u guys putting 960s depending on wich card your xps came with, it might not be a great choice because if it came with a radeon r9 270 like mine did it wont be much of an upgrade if u compare them you will see that and imo your better off spending a bit more for a 970 anyways ill try to post pics of the 980 tomorrow

The 960 might not be much of an upgrade for some, but it certainly was for me.  It replaced the GT635, which was about as bad as can be.  Despite what some are saying, I chose against the 970 because it pushes the stock power supply beyond its limits.  Since with the 960 you don't have to replace the supply, it is quite a bit less expensive.

It all depends on your budget and what performance you want.

For me, GT720 is weak, GTX960 is reasonable price, and no need to change powersupply, able to handle games I play at 1080. All done about 200$.

GTX 970, 980 of course is a monster card comparing to 960, but twice expensive, have to upgrade powersupply as well. we are talking about 450+, if you have the money, go for it. Better card is always going to be better.

Thanks for the pic man. Yes you removed a little more than I did but all is good. I found some trimming at the shop where I work and put it all around the sharp metal edges and it looks a little better now but after the case is closed, no one sees it anyway. :)

Good job. This 980 sure has ample power.

you know...the msi 980 is less than a half inch longer than the 960, and I got mine in without cutting anything.  You can't put it in straight down, but if you put the far side in first and put the sata cords under it, it will go in easily.   My card sticks out enough so that the end of it is under the panel that you cut, but it doesn't make contact.

OK.  I see what you mean about the power connection.  No, I have the 960 and the power jack isn't covered up.
