XPS 8700 nVidia GTX video card upgrades,

Now that the XPS A10 8700 BIOS update is out, Chris-M would like to close the long Black screen of death thread.

Let's use this to post successes and links out to other forums with tips, tricks and how-to-resolve issues with high-end nVidia GTX cards.

This will help others choose wisely or perhaps find a solution to an already solved problem.

In the body of your post, if you have upgraded to a high-end nVidia GTX graphics card, please list the following.

* specific video card
* exact driver version
* Brand monitor and resolution and cable type: HDMI, DVI, Display Port or (yikes) VGA
* specific power supply you are using if you upgraded or indicate Stock Dell 460W.

Ask questions, link to benchmarks, describe what has gone well and reflect on what you might have done differently.

I encourage AMD owners to start a similar discussion, but let us keep this thread to high end nVidia GTX cards only.

High end should imply above and beyond what Dell has shipped, or more than a GTX 660 or GTX 750ti.

GTX 760, 770, 780, 780ti, 970 and 980 graphics cards are what I would consider high-end.

I never said that the MSI 980 didn't fit. I said it's a tight fit and you have to modify the case just a little in order to be able to plug the 2 X 8 pin connectors. That's all.

Here is 4 pics of my MSI 980 gaming 4G. I would be interested to know if some of you have done the same thing as I did, meaning exchange their 970 for a 980 or something from AMD.

Seems like I can only post 1 picture at a time. Unless there's something I don't understand.

Lol 3 pics will do I guess. I know the metal that I removed looks a little rough but I have some very small black edge trimming at the shop where I work so I will install that and it will look less sharp around the edges.

I think you could have gone with a gigabyte which has a smaller width, but they're longer.

Yes I checked them all and knew that the Gigabyte was thinner but I also knew that the MSI would fit but that it was going to be very tight. I do not regret my purchase  the MSI is so silent and the performance is superb.

trimming looks fine but i need to ask did u need to get a longer sata cable for the bluray? coz i see u somehow made them pass under the card

No.  All cables are originals.

So, I got the GTX-960 MSI, removed the GT720, installed 960. Physically it fits.

Also, I installed a SSD, used the CD ROM cable for that.

Computer is now working good, except some software problems, 3D, shadow when playing games look bugged, maybe have to change some of the graphic settings or update video driver.

Dell 460 PSU has no problem with 960 functioning, next thing i probably will swap the regular fan with the liquid cooling fan...but that one can wait, until that fan collects some dust or starts to make noise...

Thanks for your help.

Best regardsss

Yes, the BIOS is A10.

I installed the video graphic from the CD that came with the card, and updated it after.

I don't have time to fix problem now, and I am no expert,,, gonna ask a friend to help me to fix on a weekend, let you know when it's fixed. So others who have similar problem can be aware.

Chung.

I am using a Dell monitor 24 something, forgot the exact model.

supports up to 1080, using HDMI, I am going to download the driver from nvidia instead,,,maybe the one from CD is outdated.

Thanks for the hints.
