XPS Gen 3 Heatsink question

In my machine I removed the heatsink and noticed a gray kinda plasticy substance on the bottom of it and on top of the processor, and later put it back. Was that stuff some kinda seal thats gonna cause a problem or will it be fine just set back as it is? It seems to spin the fans up more but it could just be my imagination.

Nah, I didnt remove any of the gray plasticy stuff, I'm just wondering if it was a solid piece that I broke somehow or if its fine as is.

uhhh.......thats thermal paste...you need it...it helps transfer heat from the processor or chipsets to the heatsink....if you have removed it ..I wouldnt run my machine untill I went out and bought some more and replaced it.......

You should clean off the old and put on some new.  Buy Arctic Silver 5 and follow the directions on their website.
