XPS one 20 Desktop will not load

Hi, I have a XPS one 20 which is used by the kids, last week it would start to boot get as far as the Dell logo it will load halfway along the progress bar then stops.I have tried rebooting it,I cannot run diagnostics as none of the F keys will work I have tried everything I know but to no avail. It is obviously not in warranty.I am thinking the hard drive is no more.

Does anyone else have any ideas/suggestions etc? Also Dell do not appear to have spares for this on their support pages where can I get a new hard drive if this is the problem of course

Thanks in anticipation

What color is the power button and is it solid or blinking? Codes in manual.

Have you disconnected all peripherals, except mouse and keyboard?

Can you boot from a bootable CD or DVD (eg, Dell Windows Reinstallation disk or Dell Resources Disk)?

Don't know what version SATA hard drive (eg., SATA1, SATA2 or SATA3) you have, but you can probably buy a suitable drive from any reputable seller. Most SATA drives should be backward compatible so you can replace a SATA2 drive with a SATA3, or replace a SATA1 with a SATA2, but SATA3 drives may not be backward compatible with a SATA1 motherboard.

And you can probably get one that has more storage space too.

Working inside an AIO can be complicated because so many things have to be removed to change parts so this might be a job for a geeky friend or a local PC shop.

Hi,I turned the machine on today after taking the back off it to examine the part number on the hard drive and....it works again! I did not notice before the colour of the on/off as it is placed on a desk obscuring the light.

I did read somewhere that problems can be caused by a build up of static electric do you think this may be the case here bearing in mind it now works?

I have carried out a complete back up of the system in case it fails again..being a pessimist I would have to say it will soon.If it does I will try a reboot with the discs as you suggest. From your experience would you suggest this is a HD issue? It is running a Sata 11 7200rpm,I was going to replace it with :

Seagate 1TB Solid State Hybrid Drive (SSHD) Hybrid 8GB, as I did not want to mess about with adapters for a 2.5 SSD, doing the work is easy just knowing what needs replacing is where I need a bit of expert help, what are your views on the Hybrid?

Thanks

Andy

Some times, just unplugging and letting the residual power drain from the system is enough to get it working again.

As long as you've backed up everything, and back up on regular basis, I don't think you need to panic and assume it's the hard drive.

But reboot and press F12 before Windows starts to load. Go to the Utilities partition and run the extended hard drive tests. If it passes, that would imply it's not a hard drive problem.

If this happens again, I'd start suspecting the power supply before the hard drive...

As for the drive you mentioned, I don't know if that hybrid would / wouldn't be compatible with your system. So somebody else needs to answer that question. But I bet it's expensive!

If you have a SATA II drive now, you can probably use a SATA III drive. But you'll need to find out if your hardware can support something as large as 1T.
