XPS Screech Of Death (SoD)
We have been put on the back burner far too long. Dell has buried the original thread deep in the bowels of thise message board, so I'm here to repost it and MAYBE get some answers. First, a small introduction to the problem.
The Screech of Death (forthwith known simply as SoD) is a loud, high-pitched noise that erupts from the speakers of a Dell XPS often accompanied by a total system lockup (yes with the sound still coming).
Dell and Creative have both been unable to find a reason why this is happeneing, or even a system that they can "duplicate" the issue on.
A link to the original Thread: Here
Its 17 pages. So be warned.

For anyone new to this problem - a number of us have noticed that installing the very latest MANUFACTURERS (Creative - audio and nVidia - video) drivers has reduced the problem to manageable levels, or indeed fixed the problem entirely. However, there has never been any official acknowledgement from Dell that this is a reproducable problem and that they are working on a fix. One mod on this forum (CHRIS_M) had asked us to email him our system details so they could send us drivers to test, but nothing ever materialised.

Actually, after a full reformat, I installed right to the manufacturer's drivers and got an SoD....
Perhaps I'll try rolling back to Dell's and then re-updating...

Thanks Chris
I believe normal Creative drives are that way too. Unless specifically specified.

I just got home myself and downloaded the drivers. I haven't installed yet, kinda waiting to see results from a few others. Chris M., can you enlighten me on any resolution to my other problem...
"My system has now compounded with another dilemma. I updated all of my NVIDIA drivers for my motherboard and graphics and this has created a new problem besides my audio SOD. Now when I shutdown, my XPS 720 initiates the process and all of my peripherals shut down but my computer will not. It just idles on and the only way to get it to shut down is to press and hold the power button. I'm assuming this can't be good for the system. I have since posted this dilemma on DELL forum and received two other replies saying they, too, are now experiencing the same issue. Now I am not only dealing with the SOD, but compound it with the shut down problem. I’ve tried rolling my drivers back—nope no good, uninstalled and booted to safe mode and used Driver Cleaner Pro—zilch, nada, same results. So far I’ve received no help from DELL, Creative Labs, or NVIDIA."
I posted this earlier. Yes, I have had a conversation with tech support through DELL Support and here is what they said...
Ken: "I was hoping there was a work around without having to do system restore or worse re-initialize HD and reinstall system and work from there." Agent: "Unfortunately, this is the first I've heard of this issue. I was hoping a system restore would prevent a full reinstall."
This is a BRAND NEW system I received on June 19th that replaced my XPS 700 taken out by an unfortunate direct lightening strike to my house (yes, it was even connected to a $40 surge suppressor with $100,000 coverage and was still taken out!). Any insight would be hugely, enormously, graciously welcomed! Please advise.

This Driver is not digitally signed , because its a beta i assume , every reboot or startup i get the message do i want this beta driver to run as its not digitally signed,, my volume control resets itself to 67% on every boot or restart . My Speaker config settings of 5.1 reset to 2.1 on every restart or boot.. My EQ settings reset to NON.. Enable X-FI Crystalizer resets to NON . First audio program i open was Skype. I got screech as soon as the wave file in skype finished.. this Beta driver has not fixed my screech !!!! Dell X-FI PCI Xtremegamer # 313-5450. Simply fed up with Freeken Screech issue and XPS 720
