Non-Equallogic Firmware SSD? Really?

I just saw many EQL boxes with non-EQL firmware SSD on eBay, I wonder if it's possible to have no-EQL firmware in the box?

As I always thought EQL box will ONLY ACCEPT disk with EQL FW .

Last time, I wrongly put 24 Compellent 1.2TB into PS6100 and none of it working.

PS6100 throws error "one or more drives in the array are not approved".

Hello,

Re: Ebay I would say it doesn't work and is a mistake on the page.   You need newer firmware to support 4TB drives on PS6000's.

Hello,

EQL drives require a specific manufacturing process to be recognized as "Equallogic" compatible drives. Same goes for Compellent.  It's is NOT the firmware that determines compatibility.  An EQL drive won't work in a Compellent array either for the same reason.

That's what I thought too, but I did seen someone manage to do it, but ended in disaster.

update on my 16 drive Samsung 850 PRO 512gb PS6000 array: I think they showed up as SSD.
it's dead. 12 of the 16 drives died on a power loss and restore. I had moved ALL corporate data off the array a few days earlier as 1 of the drives failed and I got spooked when I put a replacement drive in and I saw the message "unauthorized drive detected and disabled".
I have ordered 16 600gb Equallogic brand drives, and 16 SAS trays. I'm going to make this thing genuine. I think I learned my lesson.
The dead samsung drives won't initialize. it's crazy! I suspect on boot up the array gives slightly too much voltage, or something like that. I really don't know exactly what happened, but I'm sitting here with 12 dead drives.

Btw, Don, it's nice to see you again after so many years, we have exchanged email back then in 2010. You have always been very professional and help us with kindness.

Hello,

Very nice to talk to you as well.  Thank you for your very kind words!

Re: SSD. It 'shouldn't' provide too much power on startup.  But I don't recall an SSD version or a hybrid version for the 6000.  That's a much older 32bit controller.

But reverting back to EQL drives is a great idea, if you plan on still using it for non-production.

I suspect the firmware is old as well?

Don

That's not my box, but I found out someone else was able to put Samsung SATA SSD into PS5000? with disaster result at the end. I too thinking it was a much older firmware, probably v4 or below.

Anyway, I was surprised to see somehow is selling PS6000 with 3.84TB SATA  SSD (non-EQL firmware) on eBay yesterday, and wonder how did he manage to get it working.
