yes exactly, the firmware update won`t complete from 3.x to latest (dont be afraid, the eql still works), but the guys of equallogic are always improving the procedures. When you got access to the support site , please refe the readmes and docs for updating the firmware first. I had a problem with updating an EQL 5000e from 3.x to latest, after implementing the 4.05(or 07 not sure), it works fine , even via web interface, which is much easier :)
The update procedure via ftp and starting from cli sounds difficult, but it inst if you are using the step by step guide which can be found on the eql support site.

Marcus - Hmmmm we just tried with 4.07 firmware update via ftp and it seems the file name is wrong compared to documentation. We renamed the file kit_V4.0.7-R94173_4244411.tgz and at this point the update does a checksum on the file and hence fails. Is this because a 3.xx update must go to 4.05 first? Thanks in advance for your help.

please excuse if I`m asking, but are you looking for the latest firmware for the PS 5000e or are you offering the latest firmware ?
If you are lookin for the latest firmware as well as guides with a howto install and update , please navigate to https://www.equallogic.com/support/ , register your product (if not already done), you will receive a login and then you will get the firmware as well documents. If unsure and you have got support ,get in touch with technical support , they will alos provide infos and how to upgrade. Please be aware if still using the 3.X firmware , please update to 4.07 first via FTP , after that update to the latest firmware update ,should be 4.15 or similar, this can be done via web management. Please also update, if necessary the host integration tool to use the latest additions and features.
