RAID question - Optiplex 780

We require 8 computers in a RAID configuration. The requirement is this:

- 2 separate HD Disks connected to a Raid Controller
- While the PC is running, both HD`s are mirrored and updated and have permanent the same content
- You can take out one of the 2 (does not matter which) while the PC is running and nothing will happen – everything is running still as it should (if you take out the HD which is running at this moment as master the system will realize and immediately switch over)
- When one of the 2 HD`s has a defect this will be noticed by an error message to the operator on the screen
- When changing a defect HD and replacing by a new - completely empty one, you just press one button and then the mirror process will start up automatically again and the system will again work again as described above.

My question is what RAID does this? I didn't think RAID 1, but perhaps I am wrong. Also, I'm not sure the 780 allows hot-swap drives (while the computer is running). Does the 780 support this?

    Only familiar with this in the server world, but in the PowerEdge world you'll get notifcation (email, SNMP trap, page, alert to ITA or DMC console, etc..) when a drive fails.

    RAID-1 is exactly what you are describing - mirrors one drive to the other.

    In the server world, typically when you replace the drive it automatically starts to rebuild, there is no user action to take to start the process.

    From this spec sheet - http://www.dell.com/downloads/global/products/optix/en/optiplex-780-customer-brochure.pdf - looks like you can get RAID1 as an option, don't think it has hotswap bays.

    Again, likely get a better response over on the Community Forums like Dennis suggests.

    Thanks for the replies. Sorry I posted to the incorrect forum. I did discover that the 780 does not directly support HotSwap, and I would need to add a third-party bay and RAID card, which would then make it so my computer was not supported by Dell. Looks like I will need to think about a PowerEdge, or some other computer.
