The very first command will give you the list of configured hotspares. When they are "idle" you'll see a lot of zeroes in the output. When they are invoked you'll see different numbers.
Recent S.E. do offer "-failed" as symdisk option. What version are you running ??

John probably I was looking at the wrong place.. Maybe there is an issue with symcli quick reference card (straight from S.E. 6.5 documentation CD) since it still contains the following:
