G5 5090 psu upgrade to 850W that fits inside the case

G5 stock psu is a modified TFX with dimensions 85x65x225 mm.  (standard TFX is

D500E005P H500EPM-00 0Y7R0X 8.5*6.5*22.5cm https://www.ebay.com/itm/For-Dell-500W-Power-Supply-D500E005P-H500EPM-00-0Y7R0X-8-5-6-5-22-5cm-/3929...

looking at G5 case, it is not mandatory that psu upgrade has to be TFX in order to fit inside the case. when looking at stock psu, the narrowest dimension of 65 mm wide is the actual physical restriction due to motherboard in proximity, but there is no restriction of a psu to be 85 mm high. In fact it can be quite a bit taller than 85 mm (up to the width of case,169 mm). There is no other component in the case restricting this dimension.

In comes 850 W SFX psu by cooler master, V850 SFX Gold. DIMENSIONS (L X W X H)100 x 125 x 63.5 mm
not only is its width of 63.5 mm comfortably compatible with G5 case (< 65 mm), its other two dimensions can fit inside the case with ease.

So it physically fits, but what about the pinouts on the cables for the mainboard, GPU etc?

GPU pinout is standard 8 pin or 6+2 pin PCIe

For mainboard 6 pin ATX use 24 to 6 pin adapter, or mod 24 pin of psu DIY.24-to-6 pin adapter24-to-6 pin adapter

So is all this tested and it works even with a 850W PSU? because I don't want to go through all this trouble and fry my system

No user validated report of testing G5 using non OEM 24 pin psu.

this discussion topic is to give user information so that you can make your own decision.

850W psu does not have higher risk than 500W psu if it is made by a reputable vendor.  Cooler master makes better psu than Dell oem in terms of safety and stability.

I would love to know if anyone has done this and any issues they may have encountered.

not even moddiy is willing to test this due to risk of blowing up everything

Installing Cooler Master in G5 5090 case. Power plug access is not blocked.

HOWEVER 90 percent of the air flow is Blocked. And that does NOT address the 12v only standby and other connectors.

Thanks a lot to user who has recently boldly verified CoMeap 24-6 pin adapter works for XPS 8940, which shares same psu with G5, kudos.

@redxps630

this is very bad dangerous advice because nothing whatsoever was documented about how the other connectors for the motherboard were handled.  The six pin connector is only 1 of 3 that go to the motherboard.

Comeap specifically says it DOES NOT WORK.

@DELL-Chris M  would have more information.

CPU connectors ARE NOT GPU connectors and not related whatsoever.  This is beyond bad advice and could lead to damage to property and personal injury to the user.

@YogiEmoji

There are systems that have adapters but the G5 8940 7080 are not in this category.

I use Dell Precision T1700 with Moddiy Adapter and EVGA 700BR power supply.  I also have quadro RTX 4000 gpu.

This system is my daily driver and its working fine with windows 11 as well as all my CAD, Maya, VR,  workloads.  Also happens to work fine with my games.  I recommend T1700 models because they have the most features including thunderbolt option.

@YogiEmoji

There is NO Adapter for this from Moddiy or Comeap or anyone else afaikt.

You try various adapters at your own risk.

Not safe.

FRY and Die just before motherboard fire.

All components fried, CPU, Ram, Motherboard, hard drive, etc.

Anyone who says otherwise should prove that they have a solution because if you ask Moddiy or Comeap they will both tell you there is no such thing.
