Inspiron 5680, M.2 SSD or Intel Optane

I just ordered a Inspiron 5680 with just the 1GB HD. Now I'm debating whether to add a 128/256 M.2 SSD or leave the OS on the 1GB HD & add a Intel Optane module. I don't know much about Optane, been doing some research to see how effective it would be.
any advice?

yes, there is a "easy" factor :) ...simply popping in a Optane module would definitely be quick & easy. If the speeds were comparable between Optane & PCIe/NVMe SSD, I'd probably just go the Optane route. But as my research has shown, the PCIe/NVMe SSD would be much faster. I'll probably just go that route & do it s a good idea about swapping the spinning HDD with a 2.5 SATA SSD, down the road. Steam is his main program, not sure how many more programs he uses but I don't think its many.

Thanks for all the help guys!

Surprisingly, IOPS are high.

So, it's just write performance that's on the slow site. So, installing programs and doing Windows updates will suffer. It's not like a gamer renders anything or does any video work. I do wonder about swap-file performance.

Plain Optane stand-alone memory is definitely "entry-level" tech. Unlike the article, I would not call it a SSD.

well...just when I was convinced to go the NVMe SSD route, the TT review has me reconsidering, the review made the Optane look like a rockstar, very impressive!. I do agree with you that a gamer pc should really has a real SSD, but after after reading that review I think I'm going to try Optane 1st. I actually ordered both, a 32gb Optane module & the Samsung 960 EVO 250gb. I'll start with the Optane & see how it goes, if the kid is happy we'll stick with it & I'll return the 960. If there's any issues, I'll dump the Optane & switch to the 960 EVO He's coming from a Alienware x51 so I'm sure it will be much better. Maybe Optane paired w/ a SATA SSD would be the best solution...

thanks for the help!

So how did it go? I just purchased an Inspiron 3670; it was a Costco special that came with a 16GB Optane module already installed

I want to add an an SSD so am very curious about your experience and conclusions.  Wondering if I should keep Optane and add a 2.5” SATA or replace Optane with an NVMe SSD.

Thank you!

I initially bought both, tried the Optane module 1st, boot times were fast, like < 10 secs. Once he ran steam and his other apps a few times, the load times were pretty fast. It was quick, easy and cheap. he was happy, so I didnt bother with trying the NVMe SSD and returned it. Eventually I'll probably replace the 1TB hdd with a SSD .
