Battery drains in minutes after 50%

I'm using Dell Inspiron 15R  and I suddenly started having quick battery drainage issue two days ago. Normally, my battery lasts at least 4 hours after a full charge. But now all of a sudden, it has started draining in minutes. Battery seems to be charging normally.

Last night, on 76% battery, it took just an hour for the battery to drain to 6%. Today, at 48% charge, it only took ten minutes for the battery to drain to 6%.

This has never happened before. I'm not sure if it's the windows or the battery itself. But it seems strange for a battery to go from normal to draining this quickly in a day.

Note: I keep good care of the battery and almost never overcharge it. System is running on Windows 10 currently.

Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated!

How old is the battery? There is no such thing as overcharging a battery nowadays. Batteries now have safeguards. You should not drain the battery completely either. That was for old style batteries from years ago.

Check the Battery Status to see if the battery has reached end of life. If it has you need to buy a genuine Dell replacement battery. Depending on the cost and the age of the computer, maybe considering replacing the laptop with a new model is more cost effective. You can use the laptop with the adapter always plugged in if you don't need the mobility of a laptop. You might even try to use the laptop with the battery removed. Many models can work that way as a desktop replacement.

You should always post the complete name of your model. There are many 15R models.

Call Dell, they will fix it.  Sometimes it's just a firmware or software update.  You really need to concentrate on purchasing at least a 4-cell battery with a Inspiron Laptop, otherwise, it will eventually get down to only working for about 40 minutes before shut-off due to the 3-cell being such a weak option.  G5 Gaming Laptops start with 4-cell and up...there are no 3-cell cheapos.

HiraT,

I can't provide a solution because I am in the same boat. For the first time in 9 years I have decided to use my old Inspiron 1440 in battery mode. It always had a problem which Dell couldn't fix where while on AC Power it would start to discharge and not stay in charge mode. The "fix" for that was simply pull the power out and reinserts and it began to charge to 100%. So, maybe that also caused the old battery problem.

But, now I have a brand new 2-day old battery that was drained to around 5% before recharging it. It took over 3 hours to recharge it, but like the old one, it charge to within 1 hour and 20 minutes remaining and then jumped to 100% full and 0% remaining! So, charging looks exactly like old battery once within 1 hr and 20 minutes remaining. I can say the new battery on battery lasts about 2 hours or more, unlike old batter which made it 10-15 minutes. So, I am assuming the new battery is fine, but the determination of current charge status is NOT being handled properly by the Inspiron 1440.

What's new? Nothing in the last 9 years or so, but it does have Windows 10 running that long, replacing the old Windows 7 supported system. I therefore am assuming a conflict between Windows 10 and old Dell BIOS A07.

I started a discussion re to (1) the battery issue and (2) the BIOS vs. Windows 10 possibility.

I am just curious whether you discovered why your battery drained so quickly (like mine). A solution would be great.

How old is the battery? I've experienced what you're going through when my battery was failing and windows 10 couldn't calibrate it properly to keep up with the deterioration. Do you have Dell power manager or Dell command installed to check on the current health of the battery? You should also be able to check battery health in the Bios when you first boot-up. I mean you could take care of the battery like it was your first born and it could still fail over time. An Inspiron 15R goes back a few years, so I'm assuming the battery you have in it now is a replacement, plus it depends on the quality of the battery cells. You could get one of those cheap Chinese batteries off of Ebay and be lucky to get a year out of it, even if you take good care of it. If everything points to still good, the only way you're going to know for sure is if you replace it with another battery. Fortunately yours is removable.

I am using Vostro 15-3568 dell laptop. I purchased the laptop in february 2019. So my laptop is of almost 2 year and 4 months old. Till now, the battery was working fine but from few days battery life suddenly goes down from 3-4 hours to 30-40 minutes. I don't know the reason behind it. Can the battery life be fixed? or should i go for replacement? Please suggest.

I have same problem. Changed to new battery twice. Called Dell multiple times. Reinstalled Installed windows 10 pro. Nothing seems to work to resolve problem. This problem is on many dell PC like Dell Latitude 7420, Dell 7390 and a few more. Took to best buy and they can not help. I guess dell laptops have serious battery problems. I shall never buy dell ever again. Sorry. we are in the same boat to suffer because we purchased dell. BUY LENOVO. 8-year old Lenovo still going fine and never had any problem.

Here’s a video of when the battery gets low.
