Given the required disassembly needed to access it, the age of the system and plastic components including the brittle nature of plastic nearing a decade old), you're probably better off just using an external USB microphone than trying to repair the internal one.

Install OEM Driver, then check mic
then go to Dell Audio->Advanced->Restore Defaults->Restore, then check mic
then go to Dell Audio turn on Microphone enhancement, set preset to Noisy Background, then check mic
