G15 5511 Starting Hotspot Causes Blue Screen (BSOD)

I've been using the hotspot sharing feature on Windows 10 for months and have not encountered any issues, but now all of a sudden when I start the hotspot at first my internet disconnects completely until I close it quickly enough, if I leave it open long enough, I see a BSOD giving me IRQL_UNEXPECTED_VALUE with the message: "What failed: tcpip.sys" On top of that it stays stuck like that and doesn't restart even though the message says that it will. I waited 10 minutes once and no change so I concluded I had to forcefully shut it down with the power button. I figured it must be a driver issue, so I installed a previous version of the drivers both for wifi and ethernet, and still I'm seeing the issues, then I used "sfc /scannow" on a powershell to check for windows corrupt files (also used DISM commands), I found one corrupt file and I couldn't fix it, so I reinstalled windows on a clean drive, updated to the latest version, installed the latest drivers, checked for corruption again and it said nothing was wrong, and I still encountered the issue. Does anyone have an idea what's causing this? Is it an obscure windows update that broke the wifi drivers or something? or how to diagnose? It's driving me crazy. I really need to use the hotspot feature because my router's WiFi is broken and only ethernet works, so I'm sharing the connection with other devices through this laptop.

Check Problem Reports for problems and solutions

Windows 10 crash errors are collected in Problem Reports and referenced against other crash data that is available online. To access Problem Reports, follow these instructions:

  1. Click Start

    , then type "problem reports."

  2. Select View all problem reports to view a list of errors that have occurred on your computer and possible solutions for them, such as updating drivers, flashing your system BIOS, or checking for updates to software.

  3. Under the Source column, look for Windows and under Summary, look for Shut-down unexpectedly.

  4. Right-click the line item and select Check for a solution.

Hi @ajsiraj welcome to this free user to user Alienware laptop discussion forum. This is not Dell Support.

Windows Blue Screen Error IRQL_UNEXPECTED_VALUE errors are caused by missing system files or broken system registry structures. This is a critical sign of an unstable system. Please check to see if the OS(C:) boot drive storage is failing. Please install the Crystal Disk Info x64 utility application from Crystal Dew World [en] - (crystalmark.info) to check Health Status of all drives.

Hey @crimsom

Thanks for your reply, I did run diagnostics and my hardware is completely fine, turns out it was just a windows update causing the problem. As a last ditch effort I tried one last thing yesterday by starting from a clean install again, but not installing any updates from windows update, and installing drivers manually from the dell site. It works just fine now. Seems like I will need to make this thread in Microsoft forums instead. I assumed it was a driver issue which would have been a concern to Dell but it seems to be caused by a certain update from Microsoft. I don't know which one as of now, so I will simply avoid updating from now on, for as long as possible, until I'm sure they fixed the issue.

Thanks again for your reply.

Cheers.
