G15 5515, problem with starting up

Dell G15 5515 Ryzen Edition

Dell G15 5515 Ryzen Edition

Hello,

I have a problem with starting up my laptop.

I was doing some stuff when sudennly the brightness went on 100% (I thought that this will be graphics driver issue) - but it looked liked it was total GPU (i mean the RTX 3060) crash as in the task manager it was not even displayed. So I switched to device manager and restarted the RTX driver and then it seemed to work. Then I checked the dell support app and I found out that there is a bios update so I started that. Then it restarted and everything seemed to be okay but then the screen went dark and nothing else happened. I tried to remove the battery cable a then start it again but it has not solved the problem. It just turns on the keyboard brightness so I know it's on but nothing more happens. Even any combination Win+Ctrl+Shift+B or Ctrl+alt+del has not helped. So what should I do?

Thank you very much

Best regards,

Tomáš

Download and copy this BIOS_IMG.rcv recovery file to a FAT32 formatted USB.  With the USB plugged in, restart your machine while holding both CTRL + ESC keys.  Release the keys when you see the keyboard backlight lights up.  The BIOS recovery screen will appear, select the only recovery file and allow it to run.

If you missed it somehow, just repeat the process until you can get the recovery process to run.  The system will restart several times and the screen may stay dark at times.  Do not interrupt until the process complete and Windows will load again.

we have been discussing this on this thread https://www.dell.com/community/Inspiron/Dell-G15-5515-Bricked-after-latest-BIOS-upgrade-MAY-2023/td-p/8394402/jump-to/first-unread-message

The advice chino did above is valid!! but for me it does not fix my problem!

The provided information from OP led me to think it's a corrupted BIOS firmware.  A BIOS recovery may fix the issue (recovered firmware).  The G15 has BIOS Recovery 3 feature (BR3) that allows for autorecovery to start during boot if an integrity check that has to be enabled in the BIOS (Default is Disabled) fails and there is a recovery image on the hard drive.

Assuming OP did not enable integrity check option in BIOS, therefore, an autorecovery did not run.  So, I offered suggestion to perform a manual BIOS recovery (BR2) using recovery image on USB.  If done properly, it could bring the machine back to functional.

Your provided link was to a thread whereas the OP had the same issue and already fixed it with BIOS recovery method.  The OP on that thread just didn't remember the actual sequence but gathering from the combination steps and documented links, the recovery process was triggered using a recovery image on hard drive (or SSD).

When a machine developes issue and it's under warranty, the owner/user needs to contacts Dell Support first, as many issues would required replacement parts.  If the machine is out of warranty, user will choose posting here to seek help from the community.  Some people do both.  I choose to help people with machine issue but unfortunately, out of warranty.  What solution are you suggesting?

Hello,

Thank you very much everybody. The laptop had successfully booted up.

The problem with GPU not displayed in task manager remains, but for me the main thing is that I have a laptop I can read documents with as I have the exam period right now. So I'll try to fix the GPU later.

Once again thank you

Best regards,

Tomáš

Glad to hear that your machine is working again.  If you find any information was helpful with solving the issue, you can mark the post Accept as Solution.  You can also offer your own solution.  It would help others in the community as similar issues have been popping up recently.

As for your remaining issue with the GPU, just wait until your schedule is clear up.  When ready, I suggest to reinstall the RTX 3060 graphics driver.  Just remember to select perform a clean installation.

Hi there,

As I mentioned before, the machine is working again - I managed to boot up using RTC - real time clock. The missing GPU in device manager was because of hardware issue, so now I have a new GPU and it's working perfectly.

Best regards,

Tomáš
