Inspiron 7620 and Pen PN5122W stop working

I have an Inspiron 7620 2-in-1 and the recommended active pen PN5122W. It works for a few minutes after restarting the laptop, then just stops being detected by the screen. The battery in the pen is brand new and I have tested it and confirmed the battery has full power.

I have looked at Dell Peripheral Manager but it does not have any option to manage a pen available (despite what the user-guide says).

I have tried an alternative Dell pen that I normally use on another Dell laptop, and it does the same: it is detected by the 7620 for a few minutes, then stops until the laptop is rebooted.

After the pen stops working on the 7620, I am still able to use it with my other Dell laptop with no problems (Latitude 7400).

This suggests to me that the problem is very clearly on the laptop, not the pen.

Unless I can get this working more reliably, I will have to return the pen as it's useless like this.

Has anyone tried a pen that pairs via bluetooth with success?  The Dell pen connects without needing to pair via bluetooth.  I'm wondering if the bluetooth technology is a little less prone to failure than whatever Dell is using.

Some pens have bluetooth to allow a third button at the top of the pen to be pressed while the pen isn't hovering over the display. The drawing part, which is what is broken in our case, is not affected by this functionallity.

Has anyone had this issue resolved? I bought 7620 and PN5122w for my daughter for Christmas and the pen keeps disconnecting after 30mins. This is unacceptable given the cost of the laptop and pen. Been on support and it feels like a runaround: they even had me do a hard reset which is a joke given that we know it'll disconnect after another 30minutes. Any solutions?

Thanks. I might just do that if I can. Any other 2-,in-1 systems you'd recommend?

I'm still looking for an answer... if you can still return it, I'd suggest doing so as there does not seem to be a known solution (even though the thread is marked as solved).

Is your pen now still working without disconnecting?

I am using a different older computer for writing with a stylus. I don't have recommendations for a newer computer.

I am past the return window and hoping Dell will find a solution for the 7620; it does not work for me with a stylus more than a few minutes without disconnecting.

My daughter originally just had windows connect the pen automatically. Yesterday the Dell tech hade download Peripheral Manager. As long as Peripheral Manager is open and minimised to task bar the PN5122w seems to stay connected. But if it's closed down and we revert to windows Bluetooth and RF connection the PN5122W disconnects again around every 30minutes. I note that on the windows connection there is an option to allow other apps to override windows' control (ie Peripheral Manager). This was already selected by default on ours. We have had a full evening without disconnection as long as Peripheral Manager was open and running: we just minimised to task bar. I'm not a tech head, but wanted to let you know what seems to be working for us.

Suggest you to use the pen with another device and confirm the issue

Mostly Intel Drivers causing these issues

I was able to solve the problem with the Peripheral Manager. https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-us/product-support/product/dell-peripheral-manager/drivers. After installing this driver, it worked just fine

In the past, the Peripheral Manager did not make any difference for me.

Can someone from Dell post if there has been an update?

I'm still in a holding pattern and haven't heard anything of substance from Dell.

I also just confirmed that the peripheral manager is installed and the pen is paired.  The problem just repeated itself.

Dell?

I have a Inspiron 7420 2-in-1 and have the same problem. I have been in contact with support but nothing (new pen, reinstalling windows, updating drivers/bios...) has worked so far. Now they will replace my display but I don't expect that to work. I will let you know if it does.

It probably won't. I have had 3 different pens, the basic and the rechargeable (don't recommend it as it cracked after a short amount of normal use). I have yet to be able to find a solution that keeps the pen from disconnecting on my 7420 2 in 1. It is just so random, sometimes it will stay connected for hours on end, others it disconnects after a few strokes... Sometimes pulling the battery and putting it back in works to get it back up and running (probably 50% of the time). When I was using the rechargeable version, sometimes plugging it in for a second would get it to work again. I have also installed the Wacom Drivers which did help a bit, but that was not a fix that lasts.

Some things I had noticed were that the buttons on the rechargeable pen would continue to work after the nib disconnected (I had the top button set for Ctrl+z and could use it without the pen being able to draw).

The pen tends to disconnect less when the laptop is plugged in, but still does in the end.

The pen lasts longer in "tent mode" when the screen is not fully down.
