problem with Nvidia Geforce GTX 1060 max q inspiron 7577

problem with Nvidia Geforce GTX 1060 max q in dell inspiron 7577

Greeting everyone,

I have recently bought this laptop 9 days ago and the problem I'm having has been there since day1.

First of all here are the specs of the laptop
-Dell inspiron 7577 gaming laptop
-Intel core i7 7700HQ
-16 GB RAM
-1 TB HDD
-256 GB SSD
-Nvidia Geforce GTX 1060 max-q version with 6GB
-another built in intel HD 630 graphics card

Now, the problem is with the Nvidia GTX 1060 max-q graphics card. The intel HD GPU is working just fine. when i set the default graphics card to Nvidia, I keep getting Blue Screen Of Death (BSOD) and the laptop restarts. First I thought it might be a problem related to the game prerequisites, but obviously not because they work just fine with the intel GPU. When I literally do ANYTHING GPU related with the Nvidia GPU the Laptop crashes. I have tried returning the laptop which I bought online, they claimed that there aren't any problems with the hardware. however they say "prerequisites must be installed" but as i stated they work fine on the intel set as default in the Nvidia control panel. I have tried literally everything that I have read everywhere with no luck. even when I use the "userbenchmark" benchmarking tool the laptop freezes when it comes to the part that benchmarks the GPU. Even then when i benchmark with intel hd set as default it works fine. The Nvidia GPU is the whole reason I actually bought this laptop and it is not working and they won't return and i am really annoyed. I hope anyone can tell me if this is a hardware or software problem. oh I have also used the bios diagnosis and it states there are no hardware problems with the GPU. also the diagnosis on the dell website stated that there aren't any hardware problems. This problem came out of the box before i tried installing or deleting any drives. i have tried doing a clean deletin of GPU drives and hen installing with the drive on the dell website. I did the same but with installing the drive from Nvidia Geforce experience with no luck in anything i tried.

Thank you all for reading, I hope anyone has a solution.

First, be sure you understand what this system is:  it is an entry-level gaming system.  It is NOT a high performance gaming system.

High performance gaming systems ship with true, discrete GPUs.
This system does not have that - it has a software-controlled hybrid system in which the nVidia GPU is a co-processor for the Intel GPU -- the nVidia GPU is not a standalone discrete GPU -- it cannot function without the Intel GPU.

The default GPU will always be the Intel one.

Your best bet at this point is to reload the factory image on the system - that should solve the problem.  If what you were looking for is a highly capable gaming notebook -- this is definitively NOT that.

ejn63,

Also can I be sure this is a software problem not a hardware one? Because I have already tried resetting windows with the deleting all files and settings option

Also, in an attempt to fix the problem I tried updating BIOS to the latest version which, at the end of the loader, says it failed to update

Thank you for your reply,

Is resetting windows from the setting on Windows 10 enough or should it be downloading the factory image from dell?

I don't know a lot about this but isn't 1050 entry level and 1060 max q at least mid range?

This website

https://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GTX-1060-Max-Q-GPU-Benchmarks-and-Specs.224734.0.html

says the 1060 max q should definitely be able to play mainstream games at 1080p 45-60+ fps.

Have you tried updating the gpu drivers from nvidia's geforce website or maybe Intel and Dell drivers if they have any?

Maybe device manager can tell you if the gpu is working properly.

Could it be the dead fans causing the gpu to not work?

I guess you missed the return period of 30 days and now you have to talk with customer support and warranty.

Maybe you would get more help on other websites such as reddit, quora, tom's hardware, linustechtips or other tech sites that other computer enthusiasts use, users there seem to be more responsive.

What happens when you reinstall the factory Windows image?

guestdell,

I tried doing a clean install of the drivers with no luck.

device manager, BIOS diagnostics and the dell tool on the website l say it's working fine. Maybe that's why they won't return it even though I didn't miss the return period (15 days)

Thank's for the device I will post this to other tech forums

It may indeed be a power-optimized 1060, but it's a co-processor.  It is not (and cannot be made) the primary GPU in the system.

You will always see the Intel GPU as primary - only it has a connection to the display panel.

The max q is 100% a standalone GPU. It is just a binned chip designed to run at lower voltages to allow it to run cooler and fit into thinner laptops. You have no idea what you are talking about. Has almost the same core count as its desktop counter part and same memory bus and slightly lower clocks. The laptop GTX10 series preforms almost identical to the desktop counterpart when overclocked.

As far as the problem above I would try and reinstall the current drivers and go from there.

I have i5-7300HQ and HD 630 and GTX 1060 max Q.
When i run games on laptop (i was testing it on lol of legends) monitor i have 170FPS.
When i run games on HDMI monitor i have 300 FPS. (Same Settings 1920x1080 High graphics) soo its seems GTX 1060 running bad on laptop monitor but it works on HDMI. So its like a bug that we can't run games on GTX1060 while we playing on laptop monitor but GTX 1060 works properly on HDMI monitor.

Laptop with manufacturer Windows works fine, but if you want clean Windows install... I had the same problem with Intel UHD 630 and with Nvidia Driver. This solution worked for me:

1. You need to download Intel HD 630 driver 22.20.16.4836 (this worked for me)

2. If you have problem with Nvidia you need to download older version nVIDIA GeForce 23.21.13.8901,A00 (this worked for me)

Now I don't have any lags or driver issue.

Sorry for my English.

Were you able to solve the problem, as I have a 1050 7577 and it's doing the same without any errors reported in the diagnostics, so I suspect it must be to do with the power supplied by the battery or adapter (which is detected fine in diagnostics 130W and lights the blue ring OK)...is there a thing that you can do if you bought it online, and in my case, in another country...I don't want to return it but I need the nVidia GPU although I haven't had a chance to use it much (I dont game, but would like to try some GPU based CUDA programs to program). TIA

I know this thread is old but i would like to clarify on some points for future readers. Ejn63's claim that the GTX 1060 max q in the Inspiron 7577 is a co-processor and not a discrete GPU is false. There IS an integrated Intel GPU embedded into the CPU which is the default graphics processor when not gaming or running graphics intensive programs because despite the max q design being power optimized the integrated unit in the CPU is much more power efficient. The 1060 max q is a discrete GPU, NOT a co-processor and can be used in addition to or instead of the integrated graphics. By default, NVIDIA Control Panel is set to automatically decide which GPU to use based on a program by program basis. HOWEVER, the default GPU can be changed in the control panel, or you can choose to only use the iGPU or Discrete GPU via a setting in the BIOS. The 1060 is absolutely a standalone card and can be run as such in the same way as a desktop. I have also found over my own extensive use of a 7577 that the DGPU outputs via HDMI while the iGPU outputs over thunderbolt USB-C.

My 7577 must be about 2 years old now. I've lately had BSODs that appear to be related to the nvidia 1060 MaxQ drivers.... best I can tell from the cryptic BSOD message.

I fresh installed Windows 10 on the 7577 when I bought it. No issues with BSODs until very recently. I currently have the 1060 max q disabled because of the BSODs.

Not sure what the driver issue is. I'll limp along on the built-in graphics for now.
