Replace G7 7790 keyboard.
I'm currently trying to replace my Dell G7 17 keyboard and have taken out every component and followed the service manual and now I'm left with the palm rest and keyboard. The procedure stated in the service manual is useless and doesn't explain how to take out the keyboard. The keyboard seems to be somehow connected to the base but there appears to be now way to get it out. Would love any information someone may have!

On many newer systems from Dell, the keyboard is riveted or fused (melted plastic) to the bottom of the palmrest - partly to afford a measure of spill resistance. The downside to the design is that you can't replace either part separately - the keyboard and palmrest are a single unit you'll need to replace together. This is a newer model - it's also possible the keyboard is similarly bonded or riveted to the base (in which case you'd need to replace the base plastic unit with the keyboard).

Thank you very much. I should've asked about this before buying a replacement keyboard on ebay and thinking it would just be screwed in.

I appreciate your effort to respond but no... the laptop keyboard is plastic welded and riveted onto the case.In the end I sold the laptop.

Wrong laptop manual bud. Also like I said the rivets and plastic welding make it impose to replace.

Though there are places that sell keys for some systems, that this is a newer system and that the keyboard isn't separately removeable for service/replacement likely means you won't find the key replaceable -- you will need to replace the keyboard-palmrest assembly.

Does anyone know where I can find a loose key that is breaking? my right arrow key is cracked right down the middle. I had this laptop for a year. I have tried amazon and ebay. they want to sell the whole board.
Thanks

That's completely nonsense, replacing the keyboard and palm rest over one key. I don't believe the end consumer can get the keyboard and palm rest assembly. Did you even check online for the replacement keys? There are many websites that have them for sale.

If you are just needing a replacement key and hinge, have a look at https://www.replacementlaptopkeys.com/g7-17/ There are also many other websites. I hope this helps!

Well, here it is 2024 and the keyboard on my wife's G7 17 7790, which we bought in 2019, has become randomly unresponsive. Originally it was the 'w', 'e', and 'r' keys that didn't work, but now all of the keys on the row from 'q' to 'p' don't work. Ordered a new keyboard from Dell and tore the pc down. No way to remove the keyboard, so I'm in the process of returning it for a refund. Today I found a keyboard and palm rest assembly with RGB backlit keys on Amazon for $119.00 and ordered it. I actually found a cheaper one for $49.95, but it doesn't have RGB; so, I went with the pricier one since it matches what we had. I tried setting my wife up with a blue-tooth keyboard and mouse, but it is too awkward for her to move back and forth between the touchpad and the external keyboard. She's used to using her fingers to zoom on the touchpad and isn't going to give that up. So, I will install the new keyboard when it gets here and maybe she will be back in business. Too bad it isn't a business laptop as I have a Dell docking station in the closet.

I had the same issue with my G7, whilst doing some heavy duty coding some years back, the temp went up and the system shut down. Once I got it back working again I found a number of (almost random) keys were not working.
Got a wireless mini keyboard (ONN - 12 bucks at Walmart) and, fortunately, I tend to use a mouse rather than pad when at a desk, so I work with that setup.
It's actually better as I can set the laptop a little further away from my chair and it sits nicely with the other 3 monitors I use with the laptop at home for work to this day!
Obviously, the portability has taken a bit of a dump, though the mini keyboard actually sits on top of laptop keyboard without touching the keys, so I can still use it on my lap if I have to, with the pad.
