The 3521 spec sheet simply calls for one 2.5" SATA drive with no capacity given. However Crucial has up to a 2 TB SSD and guarantees it as 100% compatible. So yes you can upgrade to a 2.5" SSD to replace the HDD currently in your system.

Just for future guests, Dell notebooks does support SATA SSD drives, I have replaced a handful of HDD with Samsung SSD's. Makes for an awesome upgrade.

You would want to change the SSD for your OS and hard drive in the optical bay. you would need to find the Replacement tray to install the hard drive in your optical bay. SSD if for speed that your OS needs Hard drive for storage data speed dosn't matter that much most of the time. Your OS is always running

Everything I find online contradicts this idea that the computer doesn't support SSD drives. I find it suspect that dell does hardware doesn't allow for upgrades that would prevent consumers from continuing to purchase more hardware from the manufacturer. It is a bad way to do business.
I'd like to know why or how Dell was able to make the hard drive provided unable to upgrade to SSD?

No idea what you are typing about? if You have a standard 2.5 notebook hard drive you can replace it with a 2.5 SATA SSD. They range from 128GB to 4 TB Samsung has great ones https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Inch-Internal-MZ-76E1T0B-AM/dp/B078DPCY3T/ref=sr_1_1?crid=11YCY5BDDJ8YI&dchild=1&keywords=samsung+960+evo&qid=1590719201&sprefix=Samsung+960+Evo%2Caps%2C174&sr=8-1

hello @JOcean it might be a while since ur post, but I'm trying to find out whether or not my Inspiron 15 3521 has or not, an m.2. ssd input. Also, my dell is second hand, and for some reason the old owner removed the service tag sticker. is there a way I can find out the tag number offline? the motherboard rusted and I need to buy a new one.
appreciate it.

That model does not have an M.2 port. only 2.5" SATA. As for the service tag, go to this site and type in your model. Then at the 3521 support page click on detect PC and it should be able to scan the system for the service tag number. Alternatively you can find that information based on the directions at the Dell support page here.

Dell specs only list the drives that they have tested with the unit. That in no way means that a larger SSD cannot be installed. The specs listed are confusing and misleading in that respect. And to further confirm an increased size, Crucial guarantees compatibility as they have tested the systems and SSD hardware. If the SSD turns out to be non compatible, they will accept the return and refund as stated on their web site. This can really get confusing for Dell consumers.

It would be a lot better if people answering questions gave simple answers followed by tech talk.
YES you can replace the HD with an SSD.
It's actually really easy to do. Buy SSD of your choice. Plug into laptop. Use the client provided on SSD to mirror the HD to the SSD. Take out HD. SSD wont fit so find a way to make it snug. I used what I would describe as cardboard filler. Turn on Laptop.
Should work without an issue. Takes maybe 2 hours.
Your laptop will run like it was new.
