The waves audio driver is not supported by your current codec

Inspiron 15 3511

Inspiron 15 3511

Hello there. I'm using a Inspiron 3511 Windows 11, BIOS last build is 1.17, and audio driver is Realtek from the last update (9/11/2022). Waves MaxxAudio isn't working for some reason. It first appeared the following message for me while trying to use it: "the waves audio driver is not supported by your current codec". The program windows were blank and there was nothing to do besides closing it.

All drivers are up to date according to Windows Update and SupportAssist. Waves appears no more on Microsoft Store. Dell Support page for my drivers shows the 4.0.47.0, A06 version from Feb. 16. When you download and installs it, you'll be redirected to the Microsoft Store page where you can install it - for some reason Waves Maxx is only shown following this. However, the problem persists.

Why is that? What the heck is wrong? That problem came out of nowhere.

Some systems do not work well with the Waves version from the Microsoft Store.  Your system has both a Realtek sound driver and the Waves utility drivers.  You may need to uninstall and check the box to remove all drivers for the Waves and Realtek and reinstall just the Realtek.

The Waves utility may come back by itself after the Realtek drivers are installed or you may be able to download it directly from Dell.

Yesterday, on one of my systems, Windows offered several Realtek drivers.  I don't know why but that was on Win 10.

I found this thread after searching for the exact same issue. It happened after an update to Windows 11 on my Inspiron 16 7620.

I found the problem to be related to the 6.0.9418.1_A19 version of the drivers.
I got it working again - the solution was to install the earlier version of the Realtek audio driver, Realtek-High-Definition-Audio-Driver_D4XNW_WIN_6.0.9376.1_A04 from Dell.

Running the installer removes the current version, you then restart and it installs the 6.0.9376.1_A04 version.

So I would try installing the previous version of the audio drivers for your particular model.

Plug in a 3.5mm cable and the MaxxAudio Waves popup should appear. If not, restart and try again.

Worked for me.

Cheers for that mate, you've solved the issue for me, which 2 calls with Dell Tech Support couldn't and saved me from doing a system reset.

Mind sharing how you uninstall waves and realtek and where the box to remove all drivers exists?

I have only had my Dell Laptop for two weeks and the speakers stopped working without cause? Frustrating when its a brand new computer.  Dell system diagnosis did not turn up any problem with the audio drivers. Same responses on Windows Update and SupportAssist.  Same issue with Waves appearing blank.  This is not a good look for Dell.  This is the first dell I have bought in many years...issues with the quality is the reason I stayed away.  I should have continued to stay away.

I am having this problem too, with Realtek driver version 6.0.9509.1_A04 obtained directly from Dell's website. Any official fix would be a great way for Dell to get back into my good books with this brand new, dysfunctional laptop...

@vbsul When you install drivers, it uses an .inf file.  When you replace the driver, it uses the new .inf file, but it leaves the older one on the system.

If you just uninstall a driver, Windows will replace it with the older one unless you keep that from happening.

So, when you remove a device, check the box to remove all drivers.   You should be offline and keeping track of what driver versions are being used.  If Windows replaces the one you removed, you can check and use the process again to remove that older driver.

If your sound is using a Windows driver, then you have removed all the older Realtek drivers.  Then, while still offline, you can install the Realtek driver you have downloaded and Windows won't interfere.  Only go back online when your driver has been installed.
