Which cable?

Hello. I have an Inspiron 16 7610 and was lead to believe I could do away with the huge brick in my carry case and use 1 USB C cable to charge. I did my research and bought a USB C 3.1 gen 2 up to 10gbps cable, and I'm sure you've guessed it, it doesn't work. Now when I look at the specks online I find it's a Thunderbolt 4 connector and would need an adapter to charge my laptop, which sort of defeats the object of doing away with my brick. Usually matters from a technical point of view I'm in the bottom class and sat at the back. So any tip's, suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated. YorkieTony

The answer depends on the configuration of your system.  You may be able to get by using the Thunderbolt port/charger if your system has Intel graphics.

If it has the discrete nVidia GPU, a Thunderbolt charger is insufficient - for that configuration, you must use the original AC adapter to charge and run the system.

Thank you for your information. I have NVIDIA RTX studio so that explains why it doesn't work. Hopefully soon Dell may come up with a solution as I'm sure others will have had a similar issue.

The limit on charging through Thunderbolt is a hard limit -- it will require a revision to the specification with future generations of Thunderbolt -- which won't affect existing systems.

It now seems that maybe I was at fault, I believe the cable I used was wrong, I used a USB A to USB C. According to my research into this matter I should use a Thunderbolt 4 cable and TB4 to TB4 cables are not cheap. Do they make TB4 to USB C or A or would I need an adapter?  Once again any advice would be gratefully accepted. YorkieTony
