Does Isilon support NDMP Volume Backup (VBB)

Hello,

Can someone please tell me if Isilon supports NDMP Volume Backup commonly known as VBB. I couldn't find any reference to VBB in the Backup & Recovery guide.

Thank you

Recalling that VBB linearly reads the underlying LUN of a volume,

I'd doubt it will work with Isilon which scatters file data from all volumes/shares/exports

across all disks (in the cluster or assigned node pool).

Just to be clear, and emphasize what Peter has already said, Isilon does not support VNX VBB backups.

The NDMP standard specifies the control aspects of doing NDMP backups.  It deliberately makes no comment on the data format of the backup on "tape".  Thus generally speaking an NDMP backup from a given platform can only ever be restored on that same platform.   For example, you cannot take an NDMP backup from a VNX  and restore it on anything other than a VNX (or Unity I hope).   Similarly an NDMP back from an Isilon can only be restored on an Isilon, and so on and so on.

Cheers,
Chris

The current format that is used by the Isilon is that of a PAX/ustar file which is closely related to tar.  While it is mostly compatible with pax/ustar it does contain some Isilon specific extensions.  Besides SyncIQ I believe NDMP is the only backup that captures 100% of the filesystem metadata including the native ACL and ADS.
