Some one please help...I'm hopeless when it comes to computers!!!!!!!

Question

OK. I have a dell laptop that is running vista. I want to know what a communications port is.Can you change the port. I'm trying to do something & I keep getting a port error message. that COM4 port will run the device properly when doing certain tasks in COM4 but other tasks I'm trying to do in COM 4. The device does not work at all. I guess I'm trying to get an understanding on exactly what the different COMs do or what ports are. Can someone please help? Thanks
