What type of permissions are on the source data?  Are you a fully SMB shop, NFS shop or a mixture?  If you are purely SMB, you can use EMCopy/Robocopy.  If you are NFS only, rsync is a good tool.  WIth a mixture it gets a little more complicated.

Make sure that the user you are copying the data as has enough permissions.  Also at least on Isilon, you need to make sure that the user writing the data has enough permissions to change ownership and permissions as well.

You didn't mention what type of storage you are copying to or protocol.  If you can provide some of that we might be able to assist better.  Also, what type of permission issues did you encounter?  Did nothing make it across or did only partial ACLs, etc.

you can tell robocopy to not copy ACLs, just the data. What platform are you migrating to ?

Correct in that there is no 1 method to do the migration.  It will all depend on what you need to do so details are crucial.

The key to understanding your migration is that this should be a *client* based approach.  If you can attach a Windows desktop to your share and validate that the permissions are correct on the Isilon source, then it is your Windows tool or the destination storage that has the problem if the permissions don't get copied along with the data.

Robocopy does copy permissions and I've seen it used a LOT.  I've also seen combinations of other tools followed by a Robocopy true-up to get the permissions and any last-second updates.

Make sure you have a current copy of Robocopy - it's much faster than the older versions.
