Slow file retrieval...

hello all

we have an 8 node Isilon cluster running 9.4.0, we have an Electronic Document Management system that stores its data on a SMB share.  This app is having issues when bringing back data sets that contain a large number of files ( 400 pages + ).

The supplier has checked their side and it looks okay and have asked "Are you able to provide some visibility on the storage layer and provide some stats, See what's being locked/checked or throwing errors. "

This got me thinking how would I check this on Isilon, so is anyone able to shed light on this

thanks

Hi,

the best option on the PowerScale side is to use isi statistics. Details on the parameters and the use can be found here, for example:

OneFS 9.4 Command Reference for isi statistics

There are thousands of ways to combine the different parameters and filters of isi statistics. Node, protocols, I/Os, clients, etc.

There are many factors and things to check also on cluster side:

  • Frontend network routing and performance (e.g. with iperf), gateways, gateway priority (e.g. is source-based routing activated if there are several subnets?)
  • Data Access Pattern (concurrency vs. streaming vs. random) for the corresponding directories or node pools.
  • File Pool Policies
  • I/O Optimization settings
  • Caching (L3 etc.)
  • Load of the nodes during the transfers (e.g. CPU)
  • SMB-Share settings at the PowerScale and at the clients (SMB 3.0? Multipath?)

You could also consider monitoring the cluster and performance with InsightIQ.
