Upgrade Assistance for Insight IQ from version 4.1.3 to 4.1.4

Hi Team

We are currently using the InsightIQ version 4.1.3.88 to monitor two of our Isilon clusters. These Isilon clusters are running version 9.1.0.9.

We are planning to deploy the new version of Insight IQ using .OVA file ( InsightIQ_4.1.4.57.ova) that I downloaded from the Dell website.

My concern is how can I set up this new Insight IQ virtual appliance same as the old one. Can I export the settings from the old 4.1.3.88 and import them on the new one?

Also, Is there anything else I need to be aware of or any other pre-requisites that should be aware of? Sorry, just doing it for the first time so if some one can provide more detailed steps..

Hello ZachKahn,

Here is a link to the Isilon InsightIQ Installation Guide and if you look on page 12-15 it explains how to perform the upgrade. https://dell.to/3nXKd63

Hi Sam,

Can I use the same above steps page 12-15 for upgrading it from 4.1.2.7 to 4.1.4.57 via the .ova file which was downloaded from the Dell site, Is there any additional pre-requisites that need to be checked.

Hi,

Yes, the guide should be the same for these versions.

Hello Josh,

the guide you are pointing to is describing an ideal situation. Unfortunately, it is not working for us.

We try to migrate from InsightIQ 4.1.2.7 to 4.1.4.60 (a new VM, deployed from .ova). The guide says on page 14:
" ... you must typically export data, perform a clean install of the Linux OS, install the new version of InsightIQ, then re-import the data. ..."

We are not able to import the datastore in 4.1.4. Even if the configured datastore is a NFS share on an Isilon. InsightIQ 4.1.4 is recognising this datastore free disk space: 1.69 PiB. The exported datastore zip-file from InsightIQ 4.1.2 is ca. 75 GB in size.

But the import fails every time. Because InsightIQ 4.1.4 is anyhow using the local (internal) datastore of the InsightIQ VM (/dev/sdb1 65G 33M 65G 1% /datastore) to unpack it to (not the mounted NFS share). Why?

Hello KWI,

It is best to open a support case for this issue.

We will do that.

Thank you.

Dell support came back with the conclusion the current IIQ 4.1.4 might be corrupted and recommended to uninstall patch 4.1.4.60 using iiqtools. But iiqtools is not working:

[administrator@localhost ~]$ sudo iiqtools_version
[sudo] password for administrator:
sudo: iiqtools_version: command not found
[administrator@localhost ~]$ sudo iiqtools –help
sudo: iiqtools: command not found
[administrator@localhost ~]$ sudo iiqtools_patch --show
sudo: iiqtools_patch: command not found

Even if iiqtools is installed:

[administrator@localhost ~]$ sudo yum install --disablerepo=* /tmp/iiqtools-2.3.2-1.noarch.rpm
Loaded plugins: fastestmirror
Examining /tmp/iiqtools-2.3.2-1.noarch.rpm: iiqtools-2.3.2-1.noarch
/tmp/iiqtools-2.3.2-1.noarch.rpm: does not update installed package.
Error: Nothing to do

The Datastore Configuration mentions the NFS share's details. Similar to our old InsightIQ VM, both are having their datastore on the Isilon.

But InsightIQ 4.1.2 and 4.1.4 are using their own NFS shares and NFS export (different node, different folder) on the Isilon.

We deleted that IIQ VM and implemented a new one (4.1.4.57) using the ova file.

But this does not look to work either, after setting up IP address we are not able to specify a NFS share.

2022-02-11 09:57:42,489 ERROR [insightiq.controllers.api_datastore] Could not change datastore location: {'datastore': 'InsightIQ encountered an error setting up the NFS mount.'}

Is IIQ 4.1.4.57 working at all?

Hello KWI,

I would ensure that the NFS export path exactly matches the configured datastore path in InsightIQ. This explicit match should ensure that the intended export is mounted and the expected user mapping rules are applied.

Thank you Sam.

We deleted that IIQ VM and implemented IIQ 4.1.4.57 fresh from ova. We also followed your advise to delete the old NFS export and created a new one. And we made sure that the NFS share is configured as mentioned in the Admin Guide in the troubleshooting section (p. 28).

Additionally we had to (manually) adjust the file resolver.py (replace 'eth_dummy' with 'ens160', which is the name of the NIC in IIQ 4.1.4.57). This was a hint from Dell Support. First after all that IIQ accepted to specify a NFS share as datastore.

But when importing the datastore from IIQ 4.1.2 it still fails. Now we are getting a new error message, the log file insightiq_export_import.log is saying:

Hello KWI,

Change the name of the file back to the original. That's the only way InsightIQ is able to import a datastore
