2 out of 3 USB ports not working - dell inspiron n5110

I bought a dell N5110 last month but about 2 weeks ago, the USB port to the right side stopped working completely. And just today i noticed the USB port at the back has also stopped working. I now only have the left side port working and fear that may seize to work soon.

When i go to the device manager and click on "Other devices" i have 2 devices "SM Bus controller" and "Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controller" both of which have a yellow error icon of some sort. When i double click either of them this is the message i get:

The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)

There is no driver selected for the device information set or element.

To find a driver for this device, click Update Driver.

I have tried searching for drivers for them but i can't find them anywhere on the dell site. I found someone else who requested these drivers on another post and tried to click the links but it takes me to a blank page. Please help?

Hello, Since when I bought my new laptop Dell inspiron 5110, I had the same issue - 2 of 3 USB ports not working, and in device manager/other devices/ I had two unknown devices(SM Bus controller and USB controller). This problem occur because of two drivers missing. I just find the right solution for this issue:

Go to  and download and install the driver. Then go to http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/DriverDetails/DriverFileFormats?DriverId=K2NV2&FileId=2731100216&productCode=inspiron-15r-n5110&urlProductCode=False and do the same. That's all. The issue will be solved on 100%.

Hello,

Thanks A lot Your Solution Works For Me.

Hi harshita3006,

I will recommend you to uninstall USB root hubs from the device manager and re-install Chipset drivers:

  • Click on 'Start' and right click on 'Computer'.
  • Click on 'Manage' and click on 'Device Manager'.
  • Expand 'Universal Serial Bus Controllers'.
  • Right click on each entry with the name 'USB root hubs' and click on 'uninstall'.
  • Restart the system and install the below drivers:

Below drivers are compatible with Windows 7/Vista-32 bit/XP:

Intel HM 67 Express Chipset Family: http://dell.to/15wLWjk
Intel Management Engine Interface: http://dell.to/YTODFu
USB 3.0: http://dell.to/XprBL2
Card reader: http://dell.to/Zqlp1Z

Steps to install a driver:

  • Click on 'Download File'.
  • Select 'Single-file download' and click on 'Continue'.
  • Click on 'Save' and save the driver on the desktop.
  • Right click on the driver from the desktop and select 'Run as administrator'.
  • Install the driver following the on screen instructions.
  • Restart the system after the installation is done.

Keep me posted. Please reply for any further questions.

Hi adawi2010,

Have you made any hardware or software changes to your system? Your system has two 3.0 USB ports on the right side and on the back of the system. The one which is working currently is a USB 2.0 port. There could be a possibility that the USB 3.0 driver needs to be updated. I will recommend you to install USB 3.0 driver on your system. Here is the link: http://dell.to/XprBL2 (Compatible with Windows 7/Vista-32 bit/XP)

  • Click on the link and click on 'Download File'.
  • Check if the USB ports are working fine.
In case the issue still persists, you may uninstall USB root hubs from the device manager and re-install Chipset drivers:
  • Click on 'Start' and right click on 'Computer'.
  • Click on 'Manage' and click on 'Device Manager'.
  • Expand 'Universal Serial Bus Controllers'.
  • Right click on each entry with the name 'USB root hubs' and click on 'uninstall'.
  • Restart the system and install the below drivers:

Below drivers are compatible with Windows 7/Vista-32 bit/XP:

Intel HM 67 Express Chipset Family: http://dell.to/15wLWjk
Intel Management Engine Interface: http://dell.to/YTODFu
USB 3.0: http://dell.to/XprBL2
Card reader: http://dell.to/Zqlp1Z

Restart the system after installing all the above mentioned drivers. Keep me posted. Please reply for any further questions.
