Dell Latitude E6440 has black rectangle on screen when started up

Hi,

I have a latitude E6440 running the latest Win 10. In the last few days, every time I start my laptop from sleep or off, a black block (see pic) appears on screen but otherwise the function of laptop is unaffected (I can click behind it etc).

The block goes away after anything from a few seconds to a few minutes, not seemingly after any particular actions. Occasionally the block has gone grey or to flashing lines.

I updated to latest intel graphics driver but have seen no change.

Any thoughts very welcome.

Do you see the issue when running the LCD BIST (Built In Self Test) ?
* Power off the Dell laptop
* Connect the AC adapter (charger) to the laptop
* Disconnect all peripherals (mouse, keyboard, monitor, USB key, etc.) from the laptop
* Press and hold the D key and then press the power button. The LCD BIST mode should appear
* Continue to hold the D key, until you see color bars on the LCD. The LCD will display multiple color bars and change colors on the entire screen to red, green and blue
* Press the Esc key to Exit

If the issue is not seen when running the LCD BIST, then the fault is not with the LCD panel or its cabling. The fault must be with the GPU, the GPU driver, or the operating system itself. You should reinstall all 5 of the Chipset drivers, restarting after each one. Then reinstall the Dell OEM GPU driver, restarting when done. Then retest.

Hi,

Thanks for this.

The black rectangle does show on BIST and today has not been disappearing at all. I can try connecting to an external screen in a little while and report back?

Since it shows on BIST, the fault is either the LCD cabling or the LCD itself. The 3 year warranty has expired on this 2013 model. You will need to open it up yourself and check the cabling. If after reseating both ends of the cable, you still have the issue, replace the LCD.
