Dell Latitude E7240 - SSD Issue

Actually, mine is a E7440, not an E7240.  But same problem.  Running BIOS A09.  Will try the remove battery, let it sit, put it back in, and reboot thing when the customer returns and can work on it.  Will update with results.

Running into the exact same problem on the same laptop.  It is only 2 weeks old and suddenly can't find the hard drive.  Any thoughts from our fellow wizards out there?

I managed to resolved this by simply replacing the SSD drive, all tests came back fine on PSA however no boot device found,

even tried updating the bios firmware, SSD came back to life temp, but then failed at next reboot

I had a problem like this on an E7240 that is 7 months old. The 256GB SSD apparently failed and I lost the primary partition. Fortunately I was able to plug it into a small mSata enclosure and get off about 25GB of documents - but Dell had to replace the drive. I am going to put a second drive in there now so I can continuously backup stuff. (Actually I will crate a disk image to avoid having to load software.) Sounds like these drives are not very reliable.

I have a user with the same issue.

There is a device password on the hard drive, when the "No Boot Devices" messages is given, the laptop has not prompted for a device password yet, and the SSD is unavailable for booting.

I have found that switching the laptop off completely and then pressing F12 during the Dell logo to bring up the boot menu prompts for the password and the SSD can then be selected for boot.

Alternatively, pressing CTRL-ALT-DEL at the "No boot devices" screen performs a soft restart of the system and the password is again asked for and the system boots fine.

I suspect a timing issue whereby the disk subsystem is not fully initialised by the time the laptop wants to run the boot loader, but that's just a guess.

I moved the Msata card from the 2.5 bay to the dedicated msata slot and it worked again!

turns out the Msata to Esata converter adapter thing was broken.

I dont need it now since the Msata card lives in the MSata slot, and i've freed up the 2.5inch bay for a proper 2.5 SSD 

....so i now have 2 drives and only took an hour of downtime to figure out

Hey there, I have also been having this problem!

Although it is actually really easy to fix!

All you need is:

1) Small screw driver

2) steady  hands

3) time

STEPS:

Flip over Laptop and remove battery

Unscrew the 2 screws you will find and carefully pop off the piece protecting the computer components

locate the SSD that is preinstalled in the 2.5in SSD adapter (The adapter is delicate, and if you are having this problem it is most likely broken. Don't worry you don't need it)

Unplug the adapter from the computer

unscrew all 4 screws to remove the adapter

UNSCREW THE SCREW THAT HOLDS THE SSD TO THE ADAPTER, VERY GENTLY REMOVE THE SSD!!!!!! DONT DAMAGE IT AND KEEP THE HOLDING SCREW

find a safe place to put your SSD and the holding screw

reinstall the adapter WITHOUT the SSD

Locate the dedicated MSATA SSD slot

fit your SSD into the slot and screw in the screw to make sure that the SSD is secure

Reinstall the cover and screw in the 2 screws to make sure it fits snug

Reinstall the battery

Turn on the computer and make sure you enter the BIOS SETUP

go to boot options and make sure it is on LEGACY BOOT MODE

uncheck all boot options except you SSD

Save options and REBOOT

DONE!

Your pc should boot up and it should boot up extra fast too!
