Dell XPS 13 9350 boot time slow

Hey guys, I got a new Dell XPS 13 9350, did a clean install of windows 10 pro. windows update installed all drivers for me. Computer is working well, but the boot time is on the slow side. It takes about 23 seconds to get to windows login screen from clicking the power button.

After clicking the power button the screen remains black for about 8-9 seconds, then the DELL logo shows up. After which is starts loading windows. I've seen some videos like: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0XjdXy0yORU There it boots up insanely fast. It will show the Dell logo after only a second or 2.

I've updated my BIOS to the latest version. Fast Boot in bios is set to "minimum", so it loads the least amount of checks. What could be causing the long wait before showing the Dell logo?

I have same issue 7-10sec or more before DELL logo appears. It is really annoying.

All drivers are up-to-date Bios version the latest one.

On my previous laptop time after pressing start button to acces windows desktop was ~10 sek and it wasn't hi spec laptop like my XPS 9550 i7 512 ssd 16Gb

I hope this issue will be fixed soon.

When i started, it took me 23 sec to get into windows.

I went into bios and minimized the bios boot time - this made it 18 sec

I then enabled the "fast start" option in the power management menus - now I'm down to 11 sec.

This seems fair to me!

@sebbe91 It's not fair to me. My 3-year-old XPS 12 had subsecond times to Dell logo and ~4-5s to Windows login screen. I'd be OK for me if this new laptop (2x better in specs) was at least as fast as the old one but if it's 5x slower something is definitely wrong.

To login screen i have 8 seconds, a macbook 2015 has 12+ seconds
I understand that you want things to be faster because technology moves forward - but it might also be that there are several more things that have been added to the BIOS and the computer itself in order to better serve and evaluate different aspects of the hardware/software.

If it takes you 1 min+, then something is wrong. If it takes you 20-30 seconds it might be due to different settings being active within the BIOS or windows. I would not be determined to get it down to 4 seconds because it is a newer laptop.

Same problem here. As others pointed I also made a clean Win 10 Pro install and I run my Windows almost always without any additional *** software and use bare bones necessary services. I have been tweaking my PC's and laptops for fast boot and fast login forever so I can assure this is not a Windows issue.

I had the previous XPS 13 (don't know the code) which has lower specs but was booting in around 8 -10 seconds. This one takes over to 20 seconds. Where its still acceptable, once you are used to blazing boots with slower machines, you have to ask why?

As others pointed the problem lies in BIOS. Button to Dell logo takes a whopping 12 seconds. And then it loses another 6 seconds to rotating circle and another 6 seconds to login screen. If that initial 12 seconds could be reduced or eliminated as in my previous machine, we would be having a 10-12 second boot.

I played with pretty much all settings in BIOS to my knowledge but could not get rid of that initial boot waiting. If anyone has ideas or solutions, please share.

Hi all,

I had two support cases open, one regarding the ultra slow pre-boot power on sequence (9 seconds!) and again 8 seconds until the system finally starts boot.

Second support case was regarding the lid rubber, which has a wave cut, and is also not acceptable for a 2800EUR Laptop.

You want the Dell Premium Support feedback? Works as designed! YES! This CPU takes 8 seconds to start! Funny that other vendors have a preboot sequence from 1 second with the same CPU.

Also with the wavey cut of the lid rubber: "It's very hard to see it at all. So its ok! Don't worry that its not a straight cut, nobody will notice."

After some short discussion with the Dell PREMIUM support, they close the cases because there is nothing they can do.

And I'm speechless and this was definately the last Dell Laptop i bought.

Unfortunately this is not Dell's fault. I posted a question on notebookreview.com and got the answer. It is a DDR4 Problem not DDR3

MosGuy said:
The XPS 13 and Macbook Pro 15 both have DDR3 memory. The XPS 15 uses DDR4 which performs memory training as the bios initializes. It will always have slightly longer boot times vs DDR3.
My additional research: According to Anandtech "The downside to the user is that the number of modules in the system effects the boot time of the device. A fully laden quad-channel Haswell-E system adds another 5-8 seconds to perform this procedure, and it is something that cannot be circumvented through a different routine without disregarding part of the specifications."

anyone found the root cause of this problem? It happened to me too, and sorry, I'm using Inspiron 11 3158 (newest Intel Skylake Core i3 with single DDR3. Using Samsung SSD for the boot drive)
Fast boot already been set to minimal POST. Upgraded to newest BIOS (May 2016 update)

It's around 9-11 seconds before DELL logo showing up & windows kick in (rotating dots taking no more than 3s)

My older, 9 years laptop with SSD boot faster than this new laptop. Shame. I'll by crying if I have an XPS that boot up like this. So far my workaround is never turn it off, sleep at maximum.

I tried pretty much everything including voodoo magic :) No way. 12-15 seconds at best. And for any Dell service people that read here this is due to boot. OS starts within 3 seconds. The laptop stalls at Dell Logo for 8-10 seconds. And yes I tweaked the BIOS to no end.

I'm doing like you. Never shutting it off but it has its own quirks. Like you switch off wireless, then you put the laptop to sleep and after boot, its impossible to switch on the wifi at least from the OS. You can switch it on from the keyboard but the software still shows airplane mode and there is no way to correct it.

I have been a devout Dell fan so far. My last XPS was really something (blazing boot, no problems at all) and its too much effort to switch back to it. This one is generally acceptable with these small problems but this is one of the most expensive high end ultra books on the market and I expected better. I can't pay another 1800$+ to try their new XPS. I will switch to something else next time. So hard to gain a customer and so easy to lose.

I am disappointed as well with the boot time, it used to be around 1.5 minutes before and now it's still slow but not so excessive. In my case it got better after delaying NVIDIA Experience but I agree: even half a minute is too much for a brand new XPS when they are advertising it to be just a mere seconds.

Most of my issues were resolved by the last major USB 3/ Thunderbolt driver update.

The machine itself takes 5-8 seconds on the Dell logo, and only 1-3 for the OS. For sure it is a hardware issue, but I don't think it's going to get any better for me than it is.

My BIOS start time in task manager stays right around 4.5 - 5 seconds.

I just bought my Dell XPS 15 9550, and I have been noticing this from the start. Exact same problem! It shows nothing for many seconds, then dell comes up which takes its own time, then it goes over to windows which just takes 2 seconds. well, good to know that I am not the only one. It has been a week now. My windows is basically new, I have tried many bios settings variations, but that doesn't seem to go.

@calibre720 my dell from the 90s is faster than the new dell xps tower. I hate everything about it boot time is forever

Found this thread through google search. Based on trial and error, my problem was related to my Cable Matters USB-C multiport adapter (USB3, HDMI, Ethernet, VGA) that is always connected. I typically run HDMI, ethernet, and sometimes a usb connection with the multi-port on boot. I noticed that with the USB-C mulit-port connected, the dell logo takes 30-32 seconds to show up. If it is disconnected before power on, the dell logo takes 6-8 seconds. With either case, it reaches my os boot menu and I boot into ubuntu or windows fast.

I am running bios 1.4.4 Jun 2016 release and tried removing usb from the boot sequence and usb\thunderbird support on boot. Nothing has worked. This has to be hardware and bios issue.

Buy a Lenovo Yoga 3. Seriously. I will do that. No one bothers to address this issue. Many people are happy with 30 sec boot times with 2.000 USD end of the line laptop. If I did not know better I would be so. My previous Dell XPS was opening in 6 seconds! Way to go Dell. As a devout Dell fan, and having purchased close to one hundred Dell machines for my business in the past ten years, I'm dissappointed. I will buy a Yoga 3 and see it hands on and share my experience here. Thats the nearest laptop I can see from specs wise.

silkworm997 please do send your opinions on Yoga 3. I've also have been loyal Dell customer, their previous XPS laptops were really good but 9350 and Thunderbolt Dock (that I also own) are one of the worst experiences that I had. The technicians calling 30 seconds boot time "acceptable" and the customer service that does not know anything about problems with XPS and/or Dock... well, that's not the Dell I've been doing business years ago.
