Display problems

Hi, my computer now looks like this:

(Dell vostro 3450, about 2 years old)

It looks like that from the start of the booting process, so I can not access the bios or anything.

Using the hdmi out will render the desktop on the tv fine.

Am I looking at a defecting lcd panel !?

Hi ,

Given in this case either the LCD panel or the on-board graphic card which is integrated on the systemboard could have gone faulty .

Now to confirm the faulty component I would ask you to try these steps ,

*Connect an external monitor to the system ,if the display is bad on the external monitor then the LCD Panel is faulty .

*Initiate LCD BIST ( Built in self test ) on the system by restarting the system and pressing the D-Key .This will display solid colours on the screen if the screen is working fine .

I hope this helps ,but if there are any other queries do write to us along with the system service tag ( sent via private message ) .

Have a good day !

Kind Regards,

If you read the message carefully you will see that the poster's laptop works fine using an external monitor via HDMI cable.

ok,

The test shows white/blueish with multiple lines, similar to the original picture.

Does that mean the lcd died in less then 2.5 years? Or it could be something else? the cable going to the panel??

Yes, indeed.

I haven't had time to test it out, as this isn't my laptop, but my Mom's. I'll need to double check she followed the instructions, then i'll update this thread for a follow up and maybe replacement parts :)

Hi ,

If the lines are seen on the external monitor as well then the system board could be faulty .

But when you are mentioning about the test and if its the display test where in colors were seen and during that time if lines were seen then its the screen that's faulty .

Awaiting your response .

Hi,

This is an image of the display test results.

So that lcd didn't even last 3 years !?

Where can I get a replacement? and how much is it?

How much would it cost to have it serviced

I don't remember what model your laptop is but eBay has lots of refurbished displays at very reasonable prices.  example:  http://www.ebay.com/itm/Dell-XPS-1640-1645-LTN160HT02-Matte-16-0-FHD-LCD-SCREEN-0M077D-M077D-/111102571392?hash=item19de3ab380

I only suggest the eBay solution if you are out of warranty.  I am having a similar problem with my old XPS m1530 but have no image at all.  I have ordered a replacement from eBay and am willing to take the risk of a refurbished panel for $31.  Plus, I know the eBay sellers usually stand behind their products.  Good luck to you.

I don't remember what model your laptop is but

huh? As stated in the first post, a vostro 3450....

Do you mean Dell does not sell his own replacement parts?

Given how unreliable the lcd seems to be in a new state, i wonder what a refurbished will result in.......

Call Dell Canada Spare Parts 1-866-440-3355 and ask for prices and availability of the Dell part number. Or simply search the web for the part number.
KJ303 LCD,14.0HDF,LED,LVDS,AG,CMI
HJ387 LCD,14.0HDF,LED,LVDS,AG,Samsung
GJ475 LCD,14.0HDF,LED,LVDS,AG,AUO

Since it outputs fine to an external monitor using HDMI out, it could be the panel or the display LVDS cable 62XYW. It would be work, but you could disassemble the laptop and reseat the display cable to see if it fixes the issue. Page 61 here.
