e1705 CPU heatsink thermal pad help

Hi, I recently had to replace my 7900gs in my e1705 and while I was in there I decided to replace the thermal grease with some as5. Unfortunately, part of the thick thermal pad under the northbridge ripped while I was removing the heatsink and since there is a gap between the heatsink and the northbridge, I cannot simply replace the pad with thermal grease.

Now I'm having a problem finding a matching thermal pad and was hoping for some advice. Absolutely NONE of my nearby repair shops carry thermal pads anymore and based on what I've read on these forums, Dell doesn't sell it either. There seem to be some carriers online but I can't be sure if the pads are thick enough (the pad that fills the gap in my e1705 is about as thick as a nickel).

If I order the thermal pads online and they turn out to be too thin, can I simply stack 2 pieces together? Or could that eventually kill my northbridge chip? :smileyindifferent:

thanks

hi there,

you can go ahead and send you computer to DELL service center for repairs and they would go ahead and do it for you. The department is known as Dell Out of Warranty Department 800-288-4410 (mon-Sat 8:00 am to 8:00 pm CST). or else you might face some problems with your laptop and none of the local techs are qualified enough to do that.

Since my laptop is already open and all I really need is a new thermal pad, I would prefer to do it on my own.

But I was hoping someone could tell me if it's okay to stack two thermal pads?

thanks

It's best to avoid stacking thermal pads, but if you stack two and it's not thicker than before, it should be OK.
