It could be that the ambient light sensor is controlling the keyboard backlight. Do this: Log into Windows then hold the FN key and press the right arrow key once. This keystroke will enable and disable light sensor control of the backlit keyboard. Once the light sensor is disabled from controlling the keyboard, it should light up every time.
