Infrared port assignment to a COM port

​I purchased an USB to infrared adapter in order to be able to synchronize my Inspiron 8600 with my PDA (Palm Vx). I installed the drivers and the adapter is working because it recognizes signals to and from the PDA. However, in order to synchronize with the PDA software, PocketMirror, I need to be able to assign the infrared port to a COM port. I tried going into the BIOS based upon one of the Dell technical support documents to enable IR and change it to a COM port, but the option wasn't even there for an IR port. Is there another way to assign the IR port to a COM port?​
