Inspiron 13 7000 2-in-1 trackpad issues

I have purchased this laptop less than a week ago. http://www.dell.com/uk/p/inspiron-13-7348-laptop/pd?oc=cn34803&model_id=inspiron-13-7348-laptop

I am having problems with the trackpad. When I initially touch and move it, it takes a few millimeters of finger movement for the it to start responding. After this initial delay, if I don't take my finger of the trackpad, it works fine without any problems. Very accurate and all that. As soon as I take my finger off, I get the same issue. It isn't a major problem, but it is very frustrating.

Every time I take my finger off, I have to deal with this delay (to reiterate, it isn't a time delay but a movement one, it's always the same distance on the trackpad before it starts working). This makes two finger scrolling very jumpy and unpleasant to use.  The touchscreen is fine, so I have been using it more to scroll up and down various pages.

I have tried to look for a solution online. There aren't any driver fixes because dell does not provide trackpad drivers for this machine. I am stuck using Windows drivers which are okay besides this issue I'm having.

I hope this problem is a software and not a hardware one, I've seen other people complaining about similar issues but on slightly different machines, like the dell 7347. None of those solutions seemed to have helped.

Thank you for your quick reply. I have installed the new firmware and restarted my laptop. The touchpad experience hasn't changed.

The initial delay is still there, nothing else was wrong before, so there was nothing else to fix. It feels like if I wouldn't take my finger off the touchpad, the problem would go away, but unfortunately I can't keep my finger on it all the time.

I have been trying to change many different settings to see if they changed anything. I've tried turning off mouse acceleration - nothing changed with the delay. I've tried turning off the delay of trackpad activation after typing - nothing either (besides the setting that I'm actually changing).

When I'm navigating the screen, the short initial delay of the trackpad isn't very noticeable. The problem comes during 2 finger scrolling, it gets very jumpy because of the delay. If I don't take my fingers off the touchpad then everything is fine. As soon as I let go, I get the problem again.

I tried using other people's laptops, no one else seems to be experiencing this. Are there other settings that I can try to adjust? Maybe there's some way to make the 2 finger scrolling smoother? I love this laptop, I want it to be perform well.

I have installed this update before. I did it again just now to make sure.

There was no change to the touchpad behaviour. I really hope this isn't a hardware problem. Seems like there should be some sort of setting to change somewhere to remove this delay.

Installed the driver and restarted. No change that I can notice. The touchpad is still very accurate and works well after the initial touch with the delay.

I hope there are other things that we can continue to try.

Hi danielius16,

Some newer computers have added gesture features to the touchpad hardware and drivers. A few of these features are two or three finger scrolling, pinch zoom, circle zoom, rotate and swiping. These new features may be the reason for uncommon behavior of the touchpad, since most are turned on by default. You can disable or modify the way the features work in the touchpad driver properties.

To get to the touchpad properties, perform these steps (or refer to the videos below, available for Windows 7 and 8, English only):
For Windows 8 (8.1).
Move the mouse cursor to the upper right corner of the screen until the Charms Bar appears, click or touch Search.
In the Search box type main.cpl, click or touch main.cpl in the list of programs.
Click or touch the Dell Touchpad or Device Settings tab.
When the Dell touchpad tab option shows.
Click on the picture of the touchpad.
Click Gestures Settings (depending on your computer there may not be a gestures option).
After changing the options click OK.
When the Device Settings tab option shows.
Click the <+> next to open the options you want to change.
After changing the options click OK.

Please click on link for video : http://dell.to/1GY7KYg

Please modify the settings accordingly and let us know if the suggested steps helped.

There are no Device Settings options to change. I have attached screenshots of the tabs that I see.

The delay disappears in safe mode! The trackpad responds straight away, although it isn't as accurate, most likely because mouse acceleration gets disabled.

This must mean the delay isn't a hardware problem. Is there anything I can do to fix this besides reinstalling windows?

Thank you for the ongoing support! I really value it!

Any suggestions? I would prefer if I didn't have to reinstall windows.

Also is there anyway I could get an image of windows? Don't think I got a recovery disk or anything with my laptop. Just some programs that wanted me to create one.

If i did create a recovery disk, does it also bring along the drivers? The same drivers that might be causing the problem.

Hi danielius16,

Thank you for the update, since the touchpad works fine in safe mode we request you to let us know if you have received the Drivers and Utilities disc with the system so that the touchpad drivers could be re-installed from the disc.

I can't send you a private message. The function is not available to me on your profile. I have attached a screenshot.

I didn't receive a drivers and utilities disk with my system as my system does not have a disk drive. I did get a folder in my (C:) drive but it only contains drivers for "network" and "storage". The dell support page does not have drivers for trackpad or any other pointing device. I think my system is designed to work with microsoft drivers.

The only way I would be able to reinstall windows would be through a usb flash drive. I can perform all of that no problem. I found a guide online of how to convert a windows installation disk into a USB- based installer. I have a disk drive on my home computer so I can do that there.

I will send you my details.
