Inspiron 1520 TouchPad Troubles :\ Please Help!

I have an Inspiron 1520 with Vista Home Premium.  I know this sounds crazy, but if my laptop is left on for more than 5 hours my touchpad goes beserk!  I have minimal control over it, and when I try to close out of different windows it will get stuck between minimizing & maximizing them.  If i minimize a window and try to bring it back up from the task bar, it will get stuck trying to do both maximize & minimize intermittenly.  Does anyone know of a possible solution for this? Or should I just contact Dell and have the laptop replaced. I have owned it for about 3 weeks now.

Thanks for any help you might provide,

Rick

In case anyone is interested, I found this:

It may help until there is a permanent fix.

Hi Bill,

I have vostro 1400 purchased sept 07. Has worked fine until today. Touch pad (mouse pointer) behaves extremely erratically when power supply is connected. Works fine on battery.

Please tell me what I can do to correct the problem.

Best,

David W.

So my Dell Inspiron 1520 is just over a year old (and out of warranty of course).  My battery went out on me about 3 weeks ago, so I have been on outlet power ever since (I need a paycheck or 2 before I purchase a new battery).  About 2 weeks ago, a few of the keys on my laptop started being defective in that I would type on them and it would take several seconds for the letter to process.  Fast forward to 2 days ago - now my ENTIRE keyboard does that (some keys won't work at all) and my touchpad mouse is defective as well - the cursor does NOT go anywhere I ask it to and is very slow.  I currently have an external mouse and an external keyboard plugged in, both of which work great, but my computer is not a lap top anymore!  Any thoughts or suggestions on getting the laptop keyboard and the touchpad mouse to work again? Thanks so much in advance for your help!

For over year many people have experienced instability problem  with the touch-pad which has yet to be resolved by Dell. I for one have set the switch that enables it when mouse is absent and disabled when mouse is present (which I use all time). It provides me freedom to type without interference from touch sensitive pad. If you are looking for enable/disable switch go to Control Panel and search on Mouse. The screen with touch pad will come up. Click on that screen and you will see available options. I have found many reasons for overall unstable performance (such as battery charging problems etc.) may result from not having the BIOS upgraded. Perform a Google search for Dell Inspiron 1525 BIOS upgrade; download and install it ( BIOS upgrade 13 to 16 I believe). Other maintenance items might work such as downloading Internet Explorer 8, checking for Adobe Reader updates for Windows XP (which serves Vista Users as well), all Microsoft updates, and virus protections.

I have an Inspiron 1525 and the touch pad is giving me fits. The cursor has a mind of its own flitting about all over the screen and at times freezing up and becoming practically unuseable. This is ridiculous, hopefully there will be a fix soon, but this thread was started a year ago so it makes me doubtful of having the issue solved anytime soon!!!

I have had my 1525 Inspiron for about 7 month.  Periodically, the touchpad will not respond and moves sparodically.  I cant quite figure out why this is happening and becomes very frustrating when you move my finger over the touchpad and the pointer does not move or moves very sparodically.

Thanks for the help,

Steve

Hi Bill,

Can you help me?

Hi Bill,

I am having the same issue as everyone else in this thread with the jumping touchpad on my Vostro 1500. When I disconnect from the Flextronics 90W rev. A00, the power problem disappears and the touchpad seems to act normally. As soon as I plug it back in, the problem returns. Hopefully you can help me out.

Thanks-

I've done all the things recommended in the above entries. My BIOS are updated, the adapter is A16, so that's not the problem. I continue to have this issue, so I think it's just a Flub up in the design. It is practically impossible to play any kind of timed game d/t the freezing up and erratic movement of the cursor. I personally haven't tried to contact the Dell techs since it sounds like it would be a waste of my time and only make me angry! Maybe on a " good nerve day " I'll try that !

I posted here yesterday and my post was removed. Why?  There were no curse words used.

I have an Inspiron 1525 that I bought just 3 weeks ago. Same frustrating touchpad problems. Tried all the suggested waste of time stuff, bios, drivers, etc.

I have noticed one thing, it is much worse when charging the battery. Also, when I first received this laptop, I was using the a/c adapter from my Inspiron 6000 for the first several days, until I sold that laptop. I don't remember the revision number on it, but I do remember that it had a 3-prong cord.

Can I ask one question here? If some of these power supplies are the suspected problem, why did I receive a revision A00 power supply with this Laptop just 3 weeks ago?

I have tried to e-mail Bill my service tag and shipping address, but the email app here will not open in my browser. (IE8)

One other suggestion, if they are working on another touchpad driver, they seriously need to try to include an option to disable the touchpad while typing.

I've been having the same problem, excpet the computer doesn't have to be on too long for this to happen. The touchpad will freeze or the buttons need to be pressed multiple times to get a response. I have tried ot alter the sensitivity but it didn't make a difference. What else can I do? I haven't phoned dell support yet thought I would try this first?

Any suggestions? Thankyou

Kirsten

Hi Bill - I am having the same issues with my cursor only my laptop is a Vostro 1400.  I bought this laptop for my son Christmas of 2007.  While I am typing my cursor jumps to random places and I end up typing wherever it lands.  Could you please tell me if this cord is the same thing I need as well?  I have a 3 year warranty on my laptop.  Your help will be greatly appreciated.

I don't know if I mentioned this before, but I have solved most of the problem by taping a business card over the touchpad.
