Inspiron 17R 5721 Fan is too loud.

I have the same issue, just opened mine a few hours ago and the fan has been going full blast since. Searching dell forums and google only lead to disappointment as many other users of the same laptop have this issue as well and there doesn't seem to be any real fix apart from using some third party program to adjust the fan speed. I'm considering returning the computer as the fan is too loud and annoying and interferes with movies and music and especially work, but I'm hoping someone at Dell will have a solution for us soon because this is actually a very nice laptop.

I sent it back for a new one. I sure hope the new one doesn't have the same problem, otherwise I'll get an HP or something.

Here is a BIOS update for Inspiron 5721 (A06 version). You may download it from the link: http://en.community.dell.com/cfs-file.ashx/__key/communityserver-discussions-components-files/3518/3465.5721A06.zip

Note: Make sure the ac adapter is connected and the battery is charged 10% or above to update the BIOS. Also, disconnect all the external peripherals before updating the BIOS. All the programs should be closed and documents saved. 

Extract the driver --> Right click and 'Run as administrator' -- > Follow the prompts on screen to install the BIOS update. 

This BIOS update is not web posted yet but will be updated on support website soon. 

Please share the findings.

I am having the same issue, I just got my Inspiron 17 yesterday and the fan is super loud but when I click the link above it wants to update bios to an earlier version which is not recommended.  Any suggestions?

I got my laptop  with A09 bios version a week ago. The problem which described in thread still occur!
Why you talk about ubuntu support? and selling it with ubuntu? if after kernel  update to 3.8, screen backlight adjustment  not working (but it is can be fixed with acpi_osi option), and fan in full speed every time?! And what about fan?
I am confused, is it a Dell? It is joke? So stupid problem, can't be fixed, with 1dollar control chip?
What I should do to? Tell anybody who I know, in the large  IT company  - never buy Dell? write to canonical?! Refund it?

hello SilverSol, i want to thank you for helping others out... i tried your method and mines a A07 version and it said do i want to go lower than my version i hit yes because im TRYING hard to fix this issue i just got this from a friend and the fan is so loud like on high speed or something... i downloaded what you said and its still loud, any other suggestions PLEASE would be greatly appreciated... thank you so much...
