The problem is with the touchpad.  I've had mine replaced and it has cleared the problem. Call Dell if you have a warranty, they are aware of the problem

I have the exact same issue you are describing.  Dell told me this was a software issue and tried to make me pay $200 bucks to have it resolved.  I located the registry hack online to stop windows mobility center from populating but now every time the light on the windows mobility center short cut button (just above the keyboard to the right) lights up, the letter X populates.  The gave me the run around for months now.  I refered them to this post and perhaps they will finally realize this is a hardware issue (I am still covered) and take care of the issue finally.  I'm done with Dell, I should have known better.  In the first 6 months my hard drive went, then I had an issue with my montior and now this.  NEVER AGAIN DELL WILL YOU HAVE MY BUSINESS!

FYI - disconnecting the ribbons disables the hot buttons.  But I find I can do without now that the problem is done.  Definitely a hardware problem.  My button would activate any time I moved or even slightly bumped the computer (typing on the keyboard).  I tried a work around first (see above) but finally decided I could live without the hot buttons.

I removed the keyboard, found the ribbon that connects the hot buttons, unplugged it and replaced the keyboard.  Never had a problem again.  Otherwise, love the notebook.

Hello bilderberg, I  have the exact same problem like you, windows mobility center opens by itself when the computer moves, I tryed disabling it through the registry hack, but if you do that it immediately uses the other shortcut to open the mobility center, X, in particular "windows button" + "X". It is NOT a keyboard problem, I assure you. Do not pay for a new keyboard, it is not worth it. I broke mine when trying to fix the "x" key. I was wrong. So far, I don't know how to solve this issue but I will try to see if I can change/disable the keyboard shortcut.

Bilderberg, You exact experience was mine and I know how frustrating this issue is. I used the registry hack as well and this stopped the window mobility pop up, but X would just type randomly after that point. Dell was not helpful for a long, long time. They kept sugguesting it was a software issue and not a hardware issue. I assure you it is a hardware issue and you need your touch pad replaced on your keyboard. The touch pad is linked to the window mobility short cut keys. Get them to replace your touch pad and your issue will be resolved.

Good luck,

Also never buy a Dell again,

Hello Vasnix,

This is a hardware issue. It won't be solved by any registry hack. Actually there is a shortcut key for Windows Mobility Center located on the top right of your palm rest (There are three keys on mine , one of which is for windows mobility center). When you move your laptop somehow that key is getting activated and popping up the Windows Mobility Center. And when you disable it, "x" is typed. Actually the contacts for this shortcut key are coming in contact with something underneath, thus activating it. If you know how to open up your palm rest, you can put in some cotton or some other material just below the point these three shortcut keys are located.

That will fix the issue. I had the same issue and this fixed it.

I got my keyboard replaced. I got windows back on. I paid 290 euros to a computer service man. But nothing. I'm starting to think dell is a faulty computer manufacturer.

For those of you that are still having this problem, it may not be the keyboard, if the hotkey for Windows mobility is stuck it could also be an issue with the palmrest.  If you constantly see windows mobility center pop up, or if mobility center is disabled and a bunch of "x"s are struck I suggest a service to have both the keyboard and palmrest replaced.

If you are in the US or Canada and would like to look into having a service I can help, shoot me a private message (just click the link in my signature and then click start conversation).  If you are outside of the US and Canada please contact support in your area and direct them to this thread.  Please include the service tag of the notebook, your full name, address, telephone number and I will research possible service options.  What options are available may be limited if the service contract has expired.

As this thread is over a year old I will be locking it.  Please either contact me directly or start a new thread.

Thank you
