M3800 USB problems

Hi, I have a M3800 laptop which is having USB problems. USB devices suddenly stop showing and even a reboot doesn't always fix it. The devices can't be seen by Windows Explorer but can be seen in Device Manager?? I have tried updating drivers and also uninstalling the USB 3 hub but that crashes the laptop and it sits at Shutdown for ever until I have to press and hold power button. Anyone else having this issue or an idea what it could be?? Thanks

Yes, please let us know. I have requested my Dell rep to take the laptop back for a refund. Will see what the outcome is and take it from there.

We have two M3800s which have also been experiencing these problems.  Thanks to the observation by jstcbsams, and after EXTENSIVE testing, I think the cause is Windows security update KB2862330.  When I uninstall and hide the update, the problems seem to go away.  If I reinstall the update, the problems reappear.

Count me in, I spent several hours on the phone with Dell Pro Support , they still can't fix it

Uninstalling KB2862330 seems to be working somehow (at least the computer would not be stuck in "shutting down" process anymore I guess), but the USB function is still not the same. They can't recognize some usual USB devices.

As mentioned by @marshellyang, the sound will still be dragging.

I was wondering if upgrade to Windows 7 Ultimate will solve this issue?

Have had the exact same problem with both the shutdown and USB  - will look at the security patch.   This is consistent as the problem only occurred after a MS update reboot.   Tech support gutted and reinstalled everything and it has gotten better - but there has still been a few reboots that end up with no USB.

Will bring this article to tech supports attention.  BTW, whoever figures this out, please take the time to post the solution.

We have 11 of these computers in our office.  Of the 11, 2 of them display this issue.  Uninstalling and then hiding the update seemed to address the issue for one machine, but when I tried to apply this same fix to another computer yesterday, the issue re-appeared today (8/12/2014)

Really scratching my head on this.

To be clear, one of our 11 machines does not list this update as installed (as a pending update it's hidden) but this morning the user had the same issue where USB devices were not recognized, even the Ethernet adapter, which normally works was dark.  Shutting the machine down 'correctly' results in a hang from which the only exit is to hard power off.  On power on the usb ports work to allow me to choose to "Start Windows Normally", but do not work once you get to the login screen.  There are no lights on the attached usb devices at this point.

Fortunately after a couple of hard restarts the USB ports did resume working.  I believe I have the latest bios and drivers installed.

I did uninstall the supposedly offending Windows update and disabled power management features for the USB ports beforehand as previously suggested but that didn't seem to fix the problem.

After a lot of trial-and-error I did find that, at least in my case, having the USB Ethernet adapter plugged into any of the ports upon rebooting causes the USB ports to fail and the eventual shutdown to hang. If the adapter is not plugged into the machine when it boots then the problem does not occur for me.

I tried a decent mix of other USB devices (a flashdrive, a battery, a mouse, and a tablet) and none of them seemed cause this problem even when all plugged in. The USB Ethernet adapter was the only device I had with me that caused this.

If the adapter is plugged in after the machine has already booted up then it works and behaves normally.

I'm not sure why this was the problem in my case, but it's something to try if you haven't found a solution yet. I hope that information helps someone narrow this down.

In our case it seems that most of the time, when we're having the issue the ethernet adapter is the only one working, other devices don't (keyboard and mice) plugged directly in.  I was playing with the idea that it might be external USB hubs, but that has not held true.

Only once have I found a machine with the issue that the ethernet adapter did not work (no activity light).

I am having the same problem with two M3800 laptops. Our user takes the laptop home, and when it's connected to our network the external monitor, and usb's do not work. This is very frustrating. I will try the suggested solutions, and will post my findings.

How long have you been running this as a fix?

On my machine that continues to have the problem.  I enabled boot logging.

Using WinMerge I do see there is a difference between a successful boot and an non-successful boot.  However I only have one of each to compare with at the moment.  The differences begin at the bolded lines.  In the good boot, hidusb.sys, mouhid.sys,kbdhid.sys, rfcomm.sys, bthenum.sys, bthpan.sys, btmaux.sys, vwifimp.sys, acpials.sys, wudfrd.sys are loaded where they are not loaded in the 'unsuccessful' boot.  Also something that seems to be true is that when I have a successful boot, the Control+Alt+Delete screen gives me the option to login with the windows security button (unsure of what that is).  With an unsuccessful boot, I'm only given the "Ctrl + Alt + Delete" option.  Does that hold true for others?

On a successful boot I see the following sequence:

I've had the patch installed for about 2 weeks,   the machine went from constantly having the USB issues (losing ports and hanging on shutdown) to having none since the patch was installed.

Hi All,

I had the same problem and applying hot fix alone didn't help I had to apply the hot fix and uninstall the security update and it seems to work now. 2 weeks have gone by without BSOD.

To fix this problem I had to do 2 things

  1. Uninstall Windows security update KB2862330.
  2. And install a hot fix: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2895729

I just had one of my users get hit by this again.  He was a user I had removed  KB2862330 for.

Per the guidance from the hotfix page I re-installed the KB and then applied the hotfix.

Crossing my fingers that this will work.
