microsoft .NET Framework function

I have a DELL Inpsiron 1318 running WinVista. There are two MS .NET Framework prog installed: vers 1.1 and ver 3.5-SP1. I plan to upgrd to Win7. The Win7 upgrd advisor says the .NET 1.1 is not compatible. What does .NET Framework do? If I uninstall the 1.1 vers before upgrading the OS, will the internet contact be disrupted?

tecrowley,

If memory serves me correctly, Windows XP needs all versions of .net framework to work.

Vista and Windows 7 only need the latest version of .net framework. I have Microsoft .net framework 4 client profile, installed on my Windows 7 home premium 64-bit system.
