New Dell XPS 13 Fan Noise is ridiculous!

I was really looking forward to replacing my MacBook Air with the new XPS 13, but the fan noise is a deal breaker.  What I don't understand is how could Dell overlook this problem?  The Vostro V13 is very quiet and I barely notice when the fan is running.  Of course the MacBook Air is very quiet unless you are watching a video then it sounds like a hurricane.  But even with just Outlook open or browsing the web this fan in the XPS 13 is extremely annoying.

I was looking forward to finally having a windows key again.  Maybe Dell will get it right next time.  Everything else about the XPS 13 is awesome.

I had the same problem and have tried everything.

When the computer was starting up i saw a message 'Press Fn - X to start in normal mode' or something like that.

Then I restarted the computer and press Fn - X and after that the computer is silent :-)

It's maybe something to do with that the computer is in "manufacturing mode" and in that mode the fan is running on max..

Maybe that can happen after a bios-update !?

And then you can "Press Fn-X to return the system to normal running mode".

Maybe someone from Dell can confirme this ?

OMG, just bought a new XPS 13 and the fan noise is horrific (rest of the machine is amazing), I'll have to return the laptop if I can't get the fan noise reduced, it says BIOS A04, please let me know what I need to do to solve this issue.  Thanks Nicola

I would certainly upgrade to the newest bios which is now i believe is listed at A07,you can download from here. http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/uk/en/ukdhs1/DriverDetails/Product/xps-13-l321x?driverId=VHT3M&osCode=W764&fileId=3000755572

thanks

Good news - I upgraded to A07 and it seems to have worked, fan is still on but low noise level and the dangerously excessive heat has disappeared too.

Now if someone can just tell me how to improve the battery life I will be very happy with my XPS

Glad that has worked for you by updating the bios, extending the battery life with a magical trick is not going to happen. unfortunately it is one thing i believe lets the laptop down. I normally turn off the bluetooth which is normally running full time, and the usual disabling wifi when not on internet. You can also try reducing the brightness of the screen.

Has anyone anywhere ever been struck with the oscillating fan issue and fixed it?

Hi friends,

There is a easy and working solution to this laptop fan noise problem !!!

Just try to adjust power saving settings of Win7.

Go to:

Windows 7 Power Options:

◦click the Windows "Start" button

◦Enter "Power Options" in the Search field and then click on

"Power Options" in the Result list

on there go to :

Change plan settings

on there go to :

Change advanced power settings

on there go to :

Processor power management

set ALL Maximum processor state   settings  to   66%         (try 44% if its still too noisy for you)

THATS it.  Laptop FAN is now much more silent.   This works on all windows 7 laptops I have tryed this.

Some screenshots of those power save settings panels in windows 7

I have Bios A05 and I have the same problem. If I start any program, the fan kicks on full speed.

If I close everything (just have windows up). The fan doesn't run.

Do I need to revert to an older version of BIOS?

I have the Dell XPS 13 and my laptop also frequently makes the fan noise and it is very prominent. How can I resolve this issue? The version is D A07, 8/14/2012.

Yesterday I called support and today they replaced the heat sink going from the processor to the fan. What the technician noticed is that the white pasta between the heat sink and the CPU was squeezed out during production.

He did put a brand new one in with the right amount of pasta and I have to say it is a lot better. The Fan does not oscillate anymore.

Just got a new XPS 13 (June 2013). Fan is LOUD. I have had it for two months and I thought I would get used to it. Hasn't happened. Problem is, it is LOUD and annoying and it won't stop.

I also had a problem with the monitor, but after restarting it went away. I hope the issue doesn't come up again.

Any recommendations on what to do with the annoying loud fan are welcome.

I jointed this thread over a year ago when I bought an XPS13. The first one was so bad  I sent it back., The second one is better. It still makes noise sometimes, but I hvae been using it in different settings travelling in a dozen countries and have noticed that the fan varies dramatically depending upon the surface the computer is resting upon and whether there is any circulation in the space, suggesting that  the machine tends to be too hot and thus the fan kicks in. I have just returned to the US and the  fan noise has started up again with a vengeance on my leather topped antique desk at home, and so I am going to get a slightly raised platform to put the machine on so that air can circulate underneath and see if that helps.

XPS13 - my fan started to "run wild" maybe a month ago - a number of times running very hard until I was forced to turn off.

As of yesterday, it is on virtually all the time.

I have downloaded and installed BIOS A10, but the problem has not gone away.

Suggestions please?

Tx, Ian
