New Dell XPS 13 Fan Noise is ridiculous!

I was really looking forward to replacing my MacBook Air with the new XPS 13, but the fan noise is a deal breaker.  What I don't understand is how could Dell overlook this problem?  The Vostro V13 is very quiet and I barely notice when the fan is running.  Of course the MacBook Air is very quiet unless you are watching a video then it sounds like a hurricane.  But even with just Outlook open or browsing the web this fan in the XPS 13 is extremely annoying.

I was looking forward to finally having a windows key again.  Maybe Dell will get it right next time.  Everything else about the XPS 13 is awesome.

Well I'm DONE posting in these threads because the fool keeps deleting all the messages in them. Ignorant fool.... go to hell with your trackpad.. shove it

Tried the new Driver and still have an issue with the track pad moving all over the place when the power cord is plugged in

I have decided it has something to do with how the mother board is grounded to the trackpad.  If you Hold one hand on the unit and then use the mouse it improves the perfomance.  If it is on battery it is fine as well.  I spent hours and hours on tech support and they have now sent me TWO machines same behavior. They want to replace the track pad and mother board. This cann't be the fix?  Ether something needs to be fixed on the charger and how it grounds to the unit or fix it somehow with firmware?

I've removed AVG (based on comments in another related thread that it conflicts with the trackpad drivers), and loaded the new driver posted by harmoniclizard and my trackpad is working very well. So far, knock on wood, this combination of driver and the lack of AVG (I'm using avast instead now) is functioning properly. Problems it has solved for me (so far) are; loosing focus when typing in word (almost as if random button presses were happening when I was typing), 2 finger gestures are now working reliably, trackpad settings not getting lost or ignored after waking from sleep. I've celebrated once too often to declare success... but so far, so good.

Terry, I sent you a message a few days ago.  Have you had a chance to read it?

I have a dell studio xps 17 inches, and I have no complains; other than the fan noise.  I was hoping it was fixed by now.  It is almost time to replace it, and I think I will tr a mac this time.

Terry, I have a question. I have a xps 14 (L401X) and the fan is unbearable. Can I update my BIO as well?

Terry, I have just purchased a Dell XPS 13 Ultrabook yesterday (i5 128 GB SSD), when I originally booted up I had the A02 Bios installed and the fan noise was very loud. I since installed the A03 Bios update and this has fixed the fan noise completely. I see that Dell have released an A04 Bios update, my question is should I update my A03 to A04 given that A03 seemed to have solved my fan noise issue. I see that A04 has a few other enahncements over A03. What are your thoughts on this ? Would it be possible to roll back to A03 if A04 causes the fan noise issue to flare up again ?

Many thanks.

Suddyz

If you like the way that your system is performing now then can't suggest updating the BIOS.  If it isn't broken, there is no need to go fix it.

Hi everybody, (I'm French, sorry for my english)

I bought a Dell Inspiron N144 on June and I have a problem of a noisy fan. It's working everytime in full speed even when the computer is running any programs. I have updated the bios and also disabled all the starting programs as Terry said but there is no improvment. A Dell technician change the mother board of the computer but it's improve nothing also. So, I think, it's a manufacturing problem. I can't use a computer which is so noisy...

Hi,

I have a Dell XPS 14, which I bought just this week. I was having some issues with the laptop not coming out of sleep. After reading some of the posts I upgraded to Bios A04. Since then I am having terrible fan noise problem, which I never noticed while I was on A03.

I like the machine otherwise but the fan noise is extremely irritating. While I am typing this message I have one browser window with 3 tabs and one other program running. CPU utilization is under 25% and the fan is constantly running. Has anyone else noticed this problem with A04?

I have the similar problems. This is likely the last Dell I will buy (after a dozen in the last 10 years). I am on my second XPS. Both in the last 6 weeks. Both with the latest bios. The first one had a variable pitched constant whining noise from the fan area. Dell did many invasive diagnostics and finally sent me a new computer. The second one has the same almost-constant whining noise (even when running nothing) but thank goodness it is not variable pitched. But when the fan does come on full force (which it does often) it is almost a relief as it finally drowns out the whining noise. Maybe I just have bad luck. Before I returned the first one, I put mine and a colleague's XPS13 side by side. Hers was silent. Mine made the noise. I bought this machine to travel internationally and do not have the time (or patience at this point) to go through the usual hour and a half phone call to their tech support with all the "press 3 for ...." prompts. And I bought the three year extra warranty, too! If you are reading this and thinking of a new machine, get the Macbook air. My wife's is silent, even when running on parallels.

I just got my dell xps 13 on Wensday and had the same problem. I fixed this by installing Bios 6 update. So far it's working great.
