Newest XP SigmaTel 92XX drivers (with stereo mix) work on Vista!

Hey all,

Just thought I'd let you know that over on notebookforums, a really cool discovery has been made:

http://www.notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=169312&page=33

Basically, if you grab the XP drivers from:
http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&releaseid=R171789&SystemID=LATITUDE%20D620&servicetag=&os=WW1&osl=en&deviceid=8907&devlib=0&typecnt=0&vercnt=3&catid=-1&impid=-1&formatcnt=1&libid=3&fileid=235761

Then use winrar or a similar program to expand the EXE archive to a folder. Go into the folder, find setup.exe and right-click it go to properties. Then go to the compatibility tab and select Windows XP compatibility and hit ok.

Then run that setup.exe, and after a few minutes, you're set! Don't even need to reboot.

I've tested it here, and stereo mix works perfectly under vista from this method.

Cheers!

Can you check if then SigmaTel Control Panel works under Vista, as I have a suspicion you'll get a COM error.

If you do, in my mind that's still a workaround and not a solution as such.

Thanks :)

as usual didnt work here...
it says again non compatible system, however i changed it to be compatible with windows XP SP2 nsince i didn't have the plain one...:smileymad:

Ok here it is ....
I did it and i have stereo mix with vista in my vostro 1500
its so wrong to extract the file to a folder because the compatibility change is been applied to the setup.exe file only.

but as u download the file as it is from dell.
right click on it > properties > compatibilty > and change it to win XP SP2
then run it again as usual without any extracting...

now the results are
in recording devices you get stereo mix in addition to everything u had..... (Line in remains there)
in playing devices you loss the SPDIF device

too bad for the SPDIF.... But i sacrificed it for the stereo mix with all my pleasure..

:smileyvery-happy: thanx

Same here Malka_aria.  Athough I have the Inspiron 1720 with Vista.  I did it and now have stereo mix! Again still a workaround to gain stereo mix.  We'll still need our Vista driver to be able to have the full feature mixer.   But it is so cool to finally have stereo mix again, thanks for the find Rob.

Well I did yes checked the sigmatel from the control panel and yes it does gives you a COM error. But still I have everything else functioning very well and I used the sound recorder provided with vista to record music I was playing and it was fine. Yes I agree its just a workground.... its good for now.... but still we need genuine driver for vista from DELL so we can have what we used to have as standard in any other computer years ago and on. Wish I helped

Can someone check what happens when you double click the SigmaTel Control panel icon, in Vista?

Thanks

I also get the stacgui - Unable to connect to COM interface, error when double clicking on the SigmaTel icon in the control panel.  I have tried however, to play sample of audio for others with "stereomix" and was told it was good and very clear sounding.  I haven't tried using the sound recorder or an application like Audacity as yet.

I am a Vista user too & decided yesterday to test this WinXP sound driver workaround.

As others have found, it installs just fine if you install in XP(SP2) compatibility mode. However I also get the "COM" interface error if I try & run the Control Panel applet.

I also get a more serious problem which I've not seen mentioned elsewhere - all the recordings I have made so far using the added Stereo Mix input are RUBBISH.  They contains glitches and crackles and pops every few seconds and are therefore useless.  Since I listen to a lot of Ambient electronic mood music these are VERY noticeable. I guess if your buzz is heavy metal and rock music then these distortions and imperfections will not be so obvious.

SO I have uninstalled and gone back to the proper Vista driver, and am still hoping that Dell will SOON ADD-BACK THE STEREO MIX FUNCTION to the Vista Driver line.

Strange, all the stuff I"ve done via the Stereo MIx has been perfect. Must be your system.

Glad to hear you have no problems, but I don't think it's my system. With the Sigmatel Vista Driver I can make perfect recordings of "What I Hear" by looping the Headphone o/p back into the Line Input socket.

I also tried the workaround.
I use vostro 1400, and although I gained stereo mix, the crackling and pop became worse.
The recordings contained the same pop and crackling, which made those useless.

I would like to try the workaround about putting earphone jack.
Is it using two ended audia jack?

Does anyone know if Dell plans to add Stereo Mix to the official Vista drivers anytime soon?  Dropping the stereo mix (in collusion with the RIAA?) was a big anti-customer move, in my opinion.  It has completely broken a lot of legitimate functions, like the ability to capture audio and video from gameplay sessions using FRAPS.  It's not as if there aren't ways to pirate music with greater ease and higher quality than recording streaming audio as it plays.  The Betamax case shields Dell from any infringement liability anyway, so why cripple the drivers?

@mtwow789
Yes basically that's the workround! Connect the headphone out to the mic/line input in using a short stereo lead with 3.5mm jacks at each end. Try it, it worked OK for me.

Hi Folks

I have been roaming in the forums regarding stereo mix in vista and finally got it for my inspiron 1720 with vista. Delete the sigmstel driver first. Then download R171789 from the dell website....How to install Sigmatel R171789 XP driver in Vista and do exactly as Malka_aria did by changing the compatibility to xp (SP2). didnt even have to reboot. I got it....the stereo remix is back!!!!

thanks malka
