No microphone on Dell Inspiron 15 3521

Hey, i have the Inspiron 15 3521 with windows 8.1 and it does not recognize the internal microphone.

For example when I go to "Speech Recognition" and press "Set Up Microphone" I get 3 Options "Headset Microphone", "Desktop Microphone" and "Other" and non of them works.

I tried to reinstall the drivers and update the system but nothing works.

Please help.

Hi.I came across this problem recently. In my case there was a small piece of rubber protecting the mic that  slipped down slightly and was covering the mic. Just pry open the top screen cover and remove the rubber or glue It again In the correct position. It's situated to the left of the webcam.

Those 3 things are not options. The Speech Recognition wizard is asking you what TYPE of mic you are setting up. If it is the laptop's built-in mic you have to select "Other".

The particular mic the wizard selects depends on which one is the default recording device. You have to set the default in the Sound properties.

Open the Recording tab of the Sound properties to view a list of your recording devices. Look at "Microphone Realtek High Definition Audio" and see if it is the "Default Device". If it is not, right click on it  to open the context menu, then click on "Set as Default Device".

Here is a screen shot of an IDT microphone. I do not have a screen shot of a Realtek microphone but it works the same.

Open the Recording tab of the Sound properties.

Select (highlight) your microphone in the list of recording devices.

Click the Properties button in the lower right corner.

Select the Levels tab on the next screen.

Adjust the volume and the mic boost controls to the proper level.

If your microphone volume is still too low then there is probably a hardware issue. If the microphone you are posting about is the internal mic, it could have slipped out of position and is no longer under the hole.

I stumbled across the same problem. I did what the last post suggested that is pry opened the plastic cover of the screen and took a peek right to the camera and hold behold I saw exactly what the poster described; a little spongy squared cover which slipped away or was put faulty by DELL and it blocked the microphone hole. After adjusting it right, my microphone wasn't too quiet and voice can be heard.

I made my account for the sole purpose to give value to the post so that someone who stumbles upon the same problem and this same site knows that it may be a hardware issue which is easily fixable.

Hey, I fixed it as you said. A rubber protection needs to be adjusted. I was using it like that thinking my mic is not working and I would use headphone rather.
