Precision 5510 crashing problems

I've had VERY bad luck with Dell laptops.  Last fall I ordered the new Dell XPS 15 and it arrived with bad motherboard and harddrive, both of which were replaced and it still didn't work.  So we then returned the order and purchased instead the newly released Precision 5510.  The problems weren't so immediately apparent, but soon it became clear that the computer would crash five or six times over the course of an 8 hour workday.  The crashes may be related to Outlook and/or Explorer, but it would frequently crash when the computer was completely idle.  We didn't return the computer because we thought the problem might be driver related, but after updating all the drivers, we moved onto potential conflicts with other software and hardware.  We finally decided to have it replaced, but the replacement had EXACTLY the same problem.  This is an awesome computer, and I haven't  been able to find any reports of similar problems, but when we had the same problems with an identical machine, I didn't know what to think.  I'll be returning this machine soon, but I wanted there to be a record of my problems in case others are encountering similar problems.

Did you try putting the Samsung NVMe driver on there? Mine has been working fine since whenever I posted the other message, no blue screens in several months.

I purchased a second 5510 in mid-May. That one came pre-loaded with windows 10 and has never had any issues. I'm guessing that Dell worked the driver issue since then. I wouldn't replace any hardware. I'm pretty sure it's a driver issue.

I have the same issue but could not find the driver for my NVMe PM951 NVMe Samsung 953gb. I would be very grateful if you could you please send me the link or explain how I could do this. I am also suffering with the BSODs. Thanks.

Are you using the Dell image?  When we loaded the Dell OEM OS, all the driver problems were fixed.

I haven't got an image. I reinstalled fresh copy of Windows 10 pro without making an image. My mistake. Is the Ms windows 10 image to download in Dell's download page the one you mention? That's an older version of Windows, reason why I reinstalling from fresh trying to resolve BSOD. It would be great of I could just have the driver for the HDD. Any suggestions?

I have in my Dell precision 5510 Xeon 1tb m.2 16gb that has been having occasional BSOD with no reason attached to it. I downloaded the Windows image of 10pro 64bits from Dell and installed it fresh a few days ago with a full drive wipe out.

In Device manager,  I have the "NVMe PM951 NVMe SAMSU" installed under "Disk drives" and under "Storage Controllers" I have the "Intel Chipset SATA RAID Controller", the "Microsoft Storage Spaces Controller" and the "Microsoft VHD Loopback Controller". The "Samsung NVMe Controller" mentioned by you guys is not present.

I have not been able to install the Samsung_NVMExpress_Driver_rev11 from Samsung suggested by you guys. When I try to install it, it comes with the error message "Samsung NVM express Device is not connected. Connect the Device and try again.".

I have been looking for the correct Samsung driver like crazy and wonder where you guys got yours from? I tried with Dell support and also Samsung directly both the Samsung Memory Hanaro and the Samsung Semi-conductor branches but no one gave me the driver.

I was wondering if there is something else I could do to get this driver or if any of you guys could share it with me so I can finally install it and get rid of this annoying BSOD issue.

Thanks in advance!

Captain here

You need to change Sata-Modus from RAID to AHCI, to be able installing the Samsung NVMe Driver.

You can change it easily with this Steps:

1. Start CMD as Admin and type "bcdedit /set {current} safeboot minimal". Enter

2. Reboot and go into BIOS

3. Change Raid to AHCI. Save and Reboot.

4. Boots in Safe Mode automatically (Because of the command in Step 1)

5. Start CMD as Admin and type "bcedit /deletevalue {current} safeboot". Enter

6. Reboot

After this Steps, you should be able installing the Samsung Driver. Have fun

I wonder if anyone knows the answer to this problem yet? I have had the Precision 5510 with Win 10 and Samsung SSD. Dell have replaced the motherboard and the SSD (twice) to no effect. After months of updating bios, divers etc. etc. I'm still getting five or more BSODs a day. I can't use the machine for anything important as I can't trust it. Having paid over £1800 it's not really good enough. Would really appreciate some help.

I found that using USB-Modem pushes the problem to the max! Normally my laptop will hang 2-3 times a week, but if I use USB-Modem it hang the same way 5-7 times a day.

By hang I mean that laptop doesn't react to anything (even CAPS-LOCK led is not reacting)

the only thing, that shows a reaction - is when the laptop keyboard leds are On, and when laptop is hanging and I press a button, the keyboards leds will light up.

I purchased a Dell 5510 around mid last year Love it. Until I upgraded the ram to 32gb DDR4 gskill ripjaws. Everything was fine until the graphic intensive stuff started happening. Display would go black and show grey huge pixelated squares. I ran memory diag from bios and same thing. Ran the same test with just single 16gb module np. I did this with 4 different modules also testing twice once in each dim slot no issue. But the moment I put 2 16gb modules in CRashhhh. Very disappointing ive used dell for years we have a dozen or so people on the same platform and memory that are starting to have the same issue. Very frustrating.

Wzero0,

I have a 5510 that does the same thing: 32GB gskill ripjaws that have same specs as the RAM installed by Dell. The first time it happened, I thought the memory was defective and I had it exchanged.  I haven't tried the single 16GB module trick yet. Have you been able to resolve the issue? If so, how?

I purchased a Dell Precission 5510 , 32 Gb ram and 512 SSD M2 , Win 10 Pro , in september 2016 . From the begining this workstation give me some problems . In video & foto render just freeze the desktop and nothing working , laptop doesn't react to anything, i must press the power button to restart .

I send it in service , people from service just updated some drivers & bios an test it , they say everything is ok , but not . Still freeze all in video render , that are starting to have the same issue.

The conector cable for sata HDD missing .

Very disappointing . In the last three months this workstation just gave me headaches and nerves stretched to the max, I intend to return to Dell and ask my money back and get refocused on other manufacturers .

Motherboard changend , fresh win 10 pro install & all drivers , starting to have the same issues in same day that i received from service, any video rendering exceeding time to render over 1 h 30 min in FULL HD  ( 80 % processor & 24 % ram ) is a failure, the processor go down to 1%, and System Lock Ups or Freezes .

I made 20 attempts to render 1 h in FULL HD to 50 mb/s, but none has been completed, the processor down to 1% and it freezes. Sometimes the processor is block to 20%, sometimes 67% of render time, etc.

Any dell test & Benchmark test it was passed , but for hard video render is inutilisable.

After 1 day i send it back to service and test it there , it freezes at 49 % in video render in Adobe Premiere CC 2017 .

I will make another atempt to service , maybe another motherboard change , and another 15 days for waiting .

I wonder if anyone knows the answer to this problem yet?

I think I've had very bad luck with Dell laptops , very disapointed about this workstation .

Temp would make sense especially given that changing out parts doesn't seem to help the issue.  I even changed out the NVME SSD to another brand (Intel 600p) just to see if that would help the end user's stability.  At first it seemed the problem was solved, but after a few weeks the crashing came back and continued to get worse as time went on.  What a mystery!

I'm adding my experience to this forum as well.  My frequency of crashes is pretty random, although it seems to happen more often when running Solidworks, but had it happen too while web browsing.  My system event logs list an Error ID 41 which indicates a sudden loss of power.  The crash has happened on battery and wall power so I don't get why it would say that.

I'm trying to keep the lid open when running external monitors and Solidworks.  I'm wondering if it is a temperature related issue that causes the power supply shutdown to save itself or the processor.  I downloaded CAM to monitor my system temperature and load now too.

I'm afraid it is a HD issues somehow because my company uses dropbox for storage and the constant syncing has to be bad for the SSD gates.  I have set it up to only synce folders necessary for me.

Hoping someone else has a simiar experience.

I've downloaded CAM to track my systems temperature and see if it spikes before a crash.  CAM allows me to keep a history of system stats.  Had another crash today when I walked away from the machine and came back from a meeting.  I had just started it up a couple of hours before and only browsed the web before the crash...No Solidworks or intensive stuff.

This is super frustrating.  I have a 3 year warranty so I can always call Dell but with such infrequency to this issue, I wouldn't know where to start.  I do notice my CPU can get to 50C when browsing the web with 2 external monitors hooked up and the lid open (screen off).  That seems unusually high.
