Pressing "Caps Lock" types a T or t

Whenever I press the caps lock key, it toggles the mode correctly, however, it inserts a 'T' or 't' depending on if I am toggling Caps lock on or off... It is really quite annoying.

 TtTt (that was 4 cycles)

I suspect it is possibly in some Dell "helper" utility, as I don't believe Windows XP is responsible for the "Caps Lock: ON" banner (which also appears for Num lock and scroll lock toggles).

I am using XP Professional, SP2, on an Inspiron 8600.

Has anyone else seen this problem?

cshokie,

To see if this is a hardware problem, boot the computer to the Drivers and Utilities CD that came with your computer.  When you get to a DOS prompt, tap the Caps Lock key and see if you get a letter 't' or 'T'.  If you do, then the problem is most likely a failed keyboard.  It is possible that the problem is on the motherboard, however.

Is your system still under warranty?

Thanks for the suggestion - I was too busy troubleshooting Windows and QuickSet to remember to go back to the basics, and sure enough, Dell Diagnostics showed some error codes for the Keyboard tests. When I tested Caps Lock, the "T" blinked on the screen as well, and showed an unexpected keycode.

Replacement keyboard should be shipped today - still under warranty for another 2 years.
