Stuttering/Buzzing Sound During Audio/Video Playback

Hi,

Recently I've been having some problems playing back any sort of media.  At regular intervals the audio will freeze/skip for a second and make a loud grinding noise, then resume.  This happens with music, streaming videos, games, pretty much everything.  If I'm watching a video or playing a game, the screen will freeze for a second, then resume.

I'm using an Inspiron 1545 with Windows 7 64-bit, SP1.

I've tried everything I could think of, updating all my drivers, reinstalling codecs, running anit-virus, and cleaning out my system.  I've found that sometimes the lag corresponds to spikes in my DPC latency, but sometimes they don't, and I can't find out what's causing the spikes.  I've tried most of the solutions here: http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3517/p/19142484/19265470.aspx#19265470 ,but nothing seems to have helped, and I'm getting a bit desperate.

Any ideas?

I can only sympathize--I know exactly what you mean--when you hear it, you cringe.  It ruins my whole video/music experience.  Yesterday I did try updating more drivers from Dell and I also updated something I saw from Slim Drivers and when I was done with the update, I saw that I no longer had the 5 devices under my IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers, I now have Intel (R) Desktop/Workstation Server Express Chipset SATA AHCI Controller.  Then I also saw that I now have Intel Rapid Storage Technology and Intel Control Center installed in my programs and I think those came from Intel or maybe Dell--not sure, but last night I watched a whole 2 hour movie from Netflix and a 1 hour show and it didn't do the stutter/buzz, so I hope I solved my problem.

It seems that there must be different controllers or different updates on all these individual computers.  There is a thread about this issue on the Windows 7 forums, so it is happening with other brands as well and I do think it might be a Windows 7 issue or just an incompatable driver issue and it must take a while to figure out just which one it is.  Someone on that forum went to Geeksonline or something like that and she said that she had to disable the Matrix Storage Manager, which is related to what you all have been talking about.  But, it also seems to depend I guess on what you have because I didn't have that before, but I do have Intel Rapid Storage Technology now, so maybe I did install the correct driver.  I hope so, because after 6 months of trying to figure this out, I'm exhausted!

Oh, I also updated a wireless driver from the Dell site and I did read that people with Alienware had to update that to solve their issue.  So, it seems that this stutter/buzz is a common symptom which may have different exact causes, but the exact causes may be different depending on what is installed.  Kind of like a sneeze is a common symptom but has different causes--it could be a cold, it could be allergies, it could be allergies to cats, it could be allergies to pollen, but the symptom is the same.  That's just my take.

I asked one of my IT guys at work to watch the you tube video with the Alienware stutter so he could see what I was talking about and he said that when computers display that kind of behavior, it usually is some kind of driver issue and we all just need to figure out which one it is.  The clean boot is a way to try and narrow it down I guess, so you may need to try that too.  Believe me, I know how frustrating this is but what really is surprizing is that Dell tech support doesn't seem to be aware of this and they make it sound like they've never heard of it before and I have a hard time believing that.  They litterally said to me that they have never heard of this issue before.

Sounds like the right driver to me (as I solved my issue this way a few months ago).

the only solution for me was to uninstal the wd 7 home edition sp1 and instal another wd7 home without sp1.i did not update teh windows(just security updates)and it's working. No sound and video problem.

I thing in microsoft introduced in sp1 one wrong update or driver and that is the problem.

I had solved my problem, many months ago, with a Clean Format and Reinstall of the OS Disc that came with the DELL, I have monitored this particular feed on this forum to get an idea of what was going on. I have Noticed a VAST of different Models of Dell, and some cases XP instead of Win7, I have pin pointed the issue to a update that came from Microsoft. And Yes it came with the newer Win7 SP1 OS's too. If you have to do a Reinstall of the OS to correct this issue than, DO NOT accept "Optional Updates" From Microsoft, It IS SAFE to select the Critical Updates, Nothing in those updates cause or contribute to the problem, it is When MS offers Optional Updates for the Manufacturer that is where the problem exist. NOT From Dell, Not From Something You Did, Most People fall prey to MS Optional Updates and then the Culprit Starts. So, in Short Terms Solving the problem, Do Not select Optional Updated from MS, Either Go to Dell Site to see if an update is available for you, or the Manufacturer's site ONLY. Not MS Optional Updates.

And Yes Intel's Scanner will tell You that you have "Unrecognized", Unknown, etc. when scanning, even when it is there Items being effected, That is due to the manufacturer of the PC "Wrapping" their brand into the system. They want you to go to them for the issue. That has been a long running agreement between Intel and PC Manufacturer's... Good Luck and Keep Posting, When My Issue was going on, I had come here, and within 24hrs had reformatted my hard drive, did a clean install, unchecked ANY Optional Updates, EXCEPT the one for MS Security Essentials AV Updates. Then Problem was no longer there. I truly Hope some of you can pinpoint it, and resolve it without a complete format or reinstall.

Thank You,

Mick Barker Sr.

That's what I did initially too.  But then when I found the updated driver I reactivated it and it's been fine since.

I solved the problem on my 1545 by uninstalling the Intel Matrix bla bla bla... no more 30 second buzzes or dropouts.

Well, then we're screwed there--if I can't uninstall SP1, the only other option is to hope that one day they will send some kind of update to fix this or keep going to Dell's site and hope there are good updates.  I'm not going to go out and buy a whole new Windows 7 disc and even if I did, I'm sure it has SP1 included at this point.

Okay, lots of questions here:

How can you uninstall SP1 (and by SP1 you mean Service Pack 1, right)?  Can you just do that or would I have to reinstall Windows 7? I do have a disc from Dell that I got with this refurbished system, but the disc actually says "Windows 7 Home Premium SP1" on it. So, if I reinstalled, wouldn't I just be reinstalling SP1 again?  I may actually be good right now with my XPS8300, but I do still need to help my fiance with his GW, which is having the same issue.  If you uninstall SP1, can you reinstall only critical parts of it?  Don't we need to have SP1?

And you can't do a clean reinstall of Windows 7 unless you have a disc, right?  I looked all over for instructions on how to do that and it seems you need a Windows 7 disc to do it.  I can tell you, this has certainly been quite a learning experience!!

@aclem2004, that's part of this complicated issue--I never had the Intel Matrix Storage Controller installed on my desktop--that may have been a laptop thing.

Can someone recap for me why this new driver either is not available, or if it just isn't working for everyone?  I updated the driver for my Intel Matrix Storage device on my Dell Inspiron 1545 months ago via a link I got right from this forum.  Seems like we should be able to get this issue solved for almost everyone.  There WAS a fix for this, if it's the same problem.  I feel very frustrated for all of you that still have this stuttering issue.

The only thing I can say is that this stuttering/buzzing issue can occur for different reasons.  Usually it is a driver issue, but not all computers have the same devices.  So, my computer didn't have the Intel Matrix Storage Controller, neither does my fiance's GW, nor did the guys with Alienware.  But, we all had the same stuttering/buzzing issue.  It appears that people need to find the specific device/driver/update issue that is relative to their individual computer and that's pretty much the most frustrating thing--trying to find it.  I think Mick Barker said it several pages ago, that the fix for his computer might be totally different for other people's computers and that certainly seems to be the truth.  The biggest frustration to me though, is that tech support does not seem to recognize this stuttering/buzzing issue at all, when in fact, it appears to be a common thing.

Some people solved this with the Intel Storage Matrix update.  Some people solved it with rolling back drivers for their network cards.  The guys with Alienware had to update three different drivers in a particular order to solve it.  There have been other solutions that I can't remember, but suffice it to say, there are many different solutions for the same common problem.  And some people have updated all their drivers and codecs and still have the issue (which is the case with my fiance's GW).  I had been hoping that it was one solution for the same problem, but it just doesn't seem to be the case.
